Allie is sick - send your wishes...

She started having diarrhea yesterday then after her feeding last night had a slow crop this morning. I took her into work with me and we started her on Daytril and Nystatin until we can get into the vet... whenever that will be. She'd been acting fine until about an hour ago when she started acting puny. Now I'm starting to worry just a little bit. She's cuddled up on my chest right now and my husband and son are cleaning up the "hospital" cage for me so I can get her in there and settled.

Oh no, Vicki, that's just awful. Is there an emergency vet you can get her to? I'll be thinking good thoughts. I'm so sorry you have this worry.

How old is she? Don't forget the heat pad.

She's 10 wks, 4 days, and the heating pad is part of the "hospital" set up. It's all in the aquarium together. Aquarium, paper towels, towels, completely separate dishes, training perch (for perching in an aquarium), heating pad, syringes, and a bottle of pedialyte. I've just never had to use it before, so I made the guys do a final bleach rinse for me before I popped her in.

She's up and down in her activity... she goes from looking normal and fine to looking sickly. Her stools seem to be a wee bit more formed than they have been, but still far from normal. I'll probably be up with her tonight just checking on her. Reason tells me she'll be OK. She's still eating her cooked food and I'm able to get her to drink pedialyte whenever I ask her to, so dehydration isn't a huge concern. She seems to be much happier cuddling with me than in the sick cage, so I've got her snuggled in with me. At least with me she'll relax and rest instead of continuously trying to escape.

How is Allie?

So far so good today. the morning poo was mostly normal, but the couple after that haven't been. I called the vet and he said that he wouldn't be doing anything different other than what I'm already doing. Since I'd already started on abx, doing cultures wouldn't be any help (that's what Roz said too), but that it was smart to go ahead and start rather than wait another day for the cultures - especially since she's showing improvement. So, we'll just keep on keeping on.

Hope Allie feels better very soon.

Good news...
The slow crop seems to be resolving/resolved. We've had her on half amount of half thickness feeds and her crop has emptied normally today. I gave her a normal feed this evening and will see how she is in the morning. Her activity has been totally normal as well.

I took her in to work with me today (like I always do), but had her in the clinic in an isolette cage like what I have her in at home. The difference is that they use a shredded paper substrate to fill the bottom of the isolettes, so I wasn't able to monitor her droppings the way I like to. I'm sure I'll be seeing more soon though. We're continuing her on Nystatin but have stopped the Baytril.

I know I'm a little (or a lot?) hyper-sensitive (or hyper-aware?) after losing JJ, but I'm really not one who freaks out over nothing. I'd say on a worry scale of 0-10 (10 being totally freaked out), this started me worrying at about a 3 on Wednesday, moved to about a 5-6 on Thursday, and now I'm at about a 2. She's not totally well yet, but she will be. And until she is, I'm going to be just a little bit worried about her.
