Subject: Indoor Aviary Sun Nov 27, 2011 10:17 pm
I just post it on my blog, but I'll also share it here.
We wanted to spend more time with our birds. Before they had they own "bird room", but most of activities take place in the living room. The indoor aviary was my boyfriend's idea and we build it together.
Aviary size is a little over 5x7 foots, I can see my birds from any place in a living room and kitchen, they have a material curtain to make them sleep better at night. Inside there are 2 cages: Lucky's on the left and Chico's on right. Cages are only for food, water, shower and to keep them get used to cages in case if we'll have to move from this apartment. As you can see on video, they have plenty of toys and more is on the way ordered today.
At the moment of recording it was really ugly weather outside, and that's the reason our fids was kinda crappy. This is also the very first movie, so forgive me the quality. I'll be improving that!

I'm so jealous of your accent! It sounds so awesome! Whenever you started whistling Einstein began chirping
I love it! And all the kids get along without fighting?

That's really nice Margaret! I'm jealous. How exactly did you make it? What do you use for the screen and a door?
Even if my husband were supportive of an idea to do something like that, I don't know where I'd put it. How creative and lucky you are.

That's awesome!! I like how your birds have so much freedom within that space
My two are in a spare bedroom and their cage doors are open all day for them to fly around in it. I guess I kind of have an indoor aviary too

It reminds me ofone of my customer's aviaries...although she has it in a detached NICELY renovated garage. Her IRN's have their own cages in the flight area - similar idea

That's really neat! Was that an open closet before or a small office room? I wish I had a place like that in our house. We want to build one in the spring for our birds but it will be outside.

I'm glad you like it and Yes, they go along together. The funny thing is that budgies kinda follow Lucky. They often sleep in one perch. They had they own room to get used to. It looks funny, when little Mango and Lucky sleep together(both adopted, re-homed). I have to start making more pictures

Vicki, it wasn't really so hard. You can do it with your husband. I'm gonna try to explain what we needed to do it. Somebody please correct me if I'll use wrong word We gone to Menards and bought plumber pipes + attachments + in the garden section the wire net(one roll was enough). We spend for all ~ $100. To attach that wire net to pipes we used the plastic cable ties. All of that (I mean assembling) took us one Saturday, after which we was tired but happy! Of course before that, we measured everything. Inside and toys was my invention, I like to do those things, so it was pleasure for me.

Thanks, Between living room and kitchen is a little space fo kinda dining room, I mean to put the table. And we used that space, so we can see them and interact with them. Table was moved to kitchen, it's now tiny, but like CBT mentioned: Ah the things we do for our fids

Little update(without pictures). I guess zaza's fids gave me motivation to write it!
The indoor aviary was probably the best of my boyfriend's ideas, second to invite me for a dinner first time years ago
So how are fids there? Better, than in bird room before. I have more contact with them, when I'm at home door are all the time open, so they can make a mess also outside the aviary. Lucky became more territorial and more bossy in that place, but only to us, people. So flock dynamick changed only a bit. I guess we deserve that. He also learned to drink water from little bottles and his dish for water is for... every-bird shower
Chico is more happy, because she can go more in and out, I'm happy, because she eats more. Mickey is hissing at everybody and everybirdy, but there is no real fighting. She doesn't want to go out of aviary.
Budgies: Mango is happy, because nobody bother him to go to his cage, when is a bed time. They sleep wherever they want inside, and Mango more often with Lucky! Blueberra and Plum are everywhere, like budgies, it's hard to make them pictures. They're too fast!
I feel better, cause I can spend more time with all of them: when I'm cooking, cleaning, watching TV and with computer. Before I had to go to their room. Now, I have my own bedroom back, which is another + The only one minus so far is cleaning, really hard, but not impossible.
I'm thinking to go cage free, since they are using them to eat, drink and shower only. Cages take only space, we'll see about that.

I don't see any problem. Couch in the living room is waiting. Plus there is always extra space and plus cages for feathered. Don't forget to bring your fids, and especially Einstein, so Chico will finally see him alive!

Good job M, in our old bird room Josie put down linoleum on the floor and 2ft up the walls so we could wet mop the bird mess.

That's one of the things I'm planning to do in mine as well, though I'd never thought to go up the walls with it. I'd been planning to line the walls behind the cages with shower curtains from the dollar store. I've found that at a buck, they're very easy to brush clean AND replace when no longer serviceable.

On the floor we have original carpet, then bought and brought by ME on 2nd floor linoleum floor, then heavy-duty shower curtain and then contraction paper, which I change during cleaning.
I can't remove carpet, because apartment is not mine.
Linoleum was bought specially for 'zon and after listening to smart 'zon crazy people(Josie & Captain). I still have in my bedroom(ex-birdroom) white linoleum on one wall
