PostSubject: Nippy Cockatiel? Please help!   Wed Jan 18, 2012 10:15 pm

Hi,

I have a cockatiel named Nova, (Or is probably going to be) he is about 2-3 years old, and came from a owner that neglected him.. He bites everyone except me... well, he bites my hand, too. (He bites several places, (Kinda hard) when I put my hand under his chest, in other words, when he goes to step up.

Should I try feeding him out of my hand?

Any advice is greatly appreciated! Wiggle

you can try to hand feed him millet and eventually lure him to step up onto your hand with the millet. Various ways to tame a bird. Works well in a small room like a bathroom (with the toilet lid down). maybe let him wander around while you sit on the floor and read a book and let him get used to you.

When taming my budgies, I spent a LOT of time just being around them. Slowly they learned to trust me. Not the quickest route, but the results were great.

Also, when he nips you, don't react. Let him chomp. If you do nothing, he'll probably realize that biting gets him no where.

Agree. Spend a lot of time with Nova and be patient. I just re-homed young, nippy 'Tiel (Mickey) and I'm working with her. Millet and Nutri-Berries are helpful!
Good luck!

Its going good so far! My stepdad on the other hand... -_-

He still thinks that he owns Nova. No one really owns a animal. they have their own lives. My stepdad on the first day:
"His name is Falcore!! -Screech-"
Second day: (Today)
"His name is Brutise." "If he bites me again, hes my bird, so i can go drop him off in the mountain if I want to."

hes bein really mean to Nova. I think I will take him over to my dad's house this weekend. Smile Just so that no one tries to be mean to him.

When I adopted my 4 year old Cockatiel, he had a biting problem. That was the reason why he was in the rescue. He bit me and my family quite a lot, but all that I really did was ignore it. He'd been so used to people pulling their hands away when he would try and bite, he was probably surprised when I didn't. I never pulled my hand away, to show him that biting wouldn't do anything. Eventually, he stopped. He's a good little bird now, and will only nip me occasionally, like when I try and pet/pick him up when he's with my sister. He is SUPER obsessed with her.
