My new cockatiel (Nova) is a boy.. I've had him for about 3 weeks now. He's my best bud, and doesn't like anyone else. He's super nice to me, and all.

I took him out about 20 mins ago and found him waving at me after I wave at him! I Didn't Teach him it either! Maybe one of his previous owners? I don't know but everyone thinks I'm lying about it...! He litterally lifts up his foot, and opens and closes his 'hand' and then puts it down. Then he makes cute little sounds and leans over to my face.

Do they learn to do this on there own?

Now I have a waving cockatiel, and bearded dragon. o.o

Einstein does the same thing! when he really gets into singing, or is super excited he waves. He doesn't really do it on command, and I didn't teach it to him. Ive kind of conditioned him now, I'll wave my finger, and sometimes he'll wave back. And sometimes I'll say wave, and he'll do it.

When I think about it, he's the one training me :p

Certainly sounds like something he does that you could capture. Next time he does it, give it a name, like "wave" or Hi Nova!", then give him a treat. Do this for a few days, then start saying the word repeatedly until he starts to lift his foot, then treat. Soon he should start doing it on "command". That's how I got Merlin to do his "Wings" and "Flip" tricks! It's often easier to capture something they already do than to try to teach him a trick. Good Luck!

Thank you both! Very Happy

I'll try to train him to do it on command, but no doubts it'll work Razz

Again, thank you!

he's probably training you - he does the "wave" and you give him attention. He's training you to the "wave" cue. RogerP
