Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide

I can't say that I totally understand the chemistry behind it, but it's been approved by our Department of Agriculture to use as a disinfectant in licensed facilities. I suppose that should say something.

I was able to find and purchase it in the U.S. under the brand name Accel HERE.

Fascinating. It rather sounds like soap and H2O2 (as opposed to soap and H2O). Wonder if it's worth the price tag compared to a hose down with soap and water and a drugstore hydrogen peroxide chaser.

I was being a bit colloquial for effect, sorry about that!

Seriously, I do wonder how they have buffered it so the peroxide doesn't oxidize the surfactant, especially for long term storage.

I love the smell.

My mom always used harsh products when cleaning. They always made me feel sick to my stomach. Vinegar doesn't bother me.

Too much vinegar smell makes ME feel sick to my stomach! But I don't mind a hint of bleach or rubbing alcohol. The nice thing about hydrogen peroxide, to get back to the original subject, is that it basically has no odor. Dunno about the stabilized stuff, Vicki, let us know if you're trying it out!

A New "Green" Cleaner/Disinfectant Empty
PostSubject: Re: A New "Green" Cleaner/Disinfectant   A New "Green" Cleaner/Disinfectant EmptyThu Feb 16, 2012 1:59 pm

I bought a bottle, it arrived yesterday. I was mad at myself because I THOUGHT I was buying a gallon of concentrate when what I actually got was a gallon of ready to use. GRRRR!!! Oh well, live and learn. I haven't used it yet, but will today.

It has a smell, but no scent. It didn't really smell like anything I could identify then, or even remember now. It may just be the smell of the bottle, I can't tell. I'm SUPER sensitive to smells, scents, etc. and this didn't bother me at all. I'd say it was only 1 or two degrees away from water. OTOH, Poop-Off (which I finally tried for the first time), smells toxic to me. That stuff is awful! Had I known how terrible it was, I'd never have bought it. To its credit, it works like a charm. Poop comes right off! But the smell? Ugghhh! I ended up having to open the window when it was 30 degrees outside. (yes, I stopped using it.) I'll save the rest for Spring and use it up when it's nicer outside! Lol!

Back to the Accel...Is it worth the money? Time will tell. I'll keep you posted. :-)

Heres another one- Thymol or thyme oil. This herb-derived chemical is now available under several different brand names. If you lke the idea of a plant-based sanitizer, this may be something to look into. As you might imagine, it has a pleasant smell (thyme), which may be a welcome relief from bleach fumes. The manufacturrs reviewed for this article don’t recommend rinsing the product off, which may be a bit of a time-saver.

I've used "green" products from the grocery store with it, and I find the odor quite unpleasant and very strong. I think both "Method" and "Seventh Generation" bath wipes use it. I wouldn't use it directly around birds personally, the odor is too strong. The MSDS sheet on it says it can cause respiratory irritation among other things.

Yeah, Poop off is a little stinky, but not in a way that I find irritating, just kind of cloying. It has the advantage that it has been used extensively around birds...

I've never used thyme oil but your experience is good to know about before I run out and buy a bottle, only to hate it.

See? I TOLD you I was really sensitive to scents/odors! But I do agree, the fact that it's been determined to be safe around birds is a big plus. However, I couldn't find anywhere that it disinfects or sanitizes, only that it removes poop and poop stains, so once you've got the poop-off, you've still got to go back through and clean. (Just a thought.)

I think it does as well as soap and water... that doesn't disinfect or sanitize either. I have to admit that I don't really worry that much about sanitizing. I want the food and water dishes well cleaned (I run them through the dishwasher) and I'll use a veterinary disinfectant when I do a major haul-outside-and-hose but for the most part I go for removal of debris and poop and food mess, I don't try to keep it sterile. So much of the time I wipe down with poop-off wipes and/or scrub stuff with dish soap in the sink.

I messed around a bit with a steam cleaner, and it did an OK job of cleaning, but I came to the conclusion that in normal use with a normal grade machine like the one I got, it did not sterilize anything, so I don't tend to bother now. However, it is pretty effective at cleaning, better than just wiping down and almost as good as going outside with the hose. It has the advantage of no odor at all. And if you spend big bucks on one that produces super-heated steam you can even use it to sanitize non-porous surfaces, although it might prove really tedious.

i haven't used this yet but am going to try when i run out of poop off...

  • 1 clean, empty spray bottle
  • 3 cups hot water
  • 3 tbsp Baking Soda
  • 2 tbsp pure Lemon Juice
Lemon juice may not seem like an attractive ingredient to all bird
owners, but is completely safe for birds and contains natural enzymes
that act as a disinfectant to kill bacteria and help break down organic
material.

PostSubject: Re: A New "Green" Cleaner/Disinfectant   A New "Green" Cleaner/Disinfectant EmptyThu Feb 16, 2012 8:03 pm

Yeah, I see that one a lot and it's probably harmless. Best I can figure, the acid in the lemon juice cuts grease and kills some germs and the abrasive texture of the baking soda acts as a scrub. But mostly the baking soda and lemon juice are going to neutralize each other chemically, so better use it quick. I think people feel it's "stong" because it fizzes and bubbles while the reaction is going on.

I don't think there is significant enzyme content in lemon juice -- enzymes are proteins, citrus does not have a lot of protein... if anything is effecive it's the acid, it is quite acidic. Just because someone claims it on the internet, doesn't make it true...
