New Carpet and Parrot Safety, Tell Me What You Know! Empty

So... it is looking extremely likely that we will be selling this house and moving up to the Palmdale area. We had "our" real estate agent over for an initial discussion and he gave us a plausible list price that was much higher than we had feared, so we should easily clear a downpayment. Whew! He also thinks the house won't be on the market long, that it is quite desirable even in this market. I knew we had a nice house! Makes me sad to be leaving it, but that's a whole 'nother story.

We will need to replace the carpet. Little Nikki, the only cat I've ever had that couldn't be trained out of it, has dug up the corners of the carpet, plus it's just old (it was getting there 6 years ago when we moved in) and kind of grungy. Most of the house is hardwood and tile, but we have the hallway and two bedrooms worth to replace. And I have heard that some carpet finishes and fresh padding may shed enough particulates/outgas enough to cause problems for birds, so I'm wondering if anyone has any actual solid knowledge about the degree of risk and where the risk lies. And how long the carpet needs to "age" to be considered safe (until it doesn't smell like new carpet?)

The room the birds live in is hardwood floored, but the hallway runs right past the door. Depending on how substantial the risk is, we could do anything from keeping the door shut and window open to moving them to the other end of the house for a few days to boarding them out for a while.

The other option would be to pull the carpet and refinish the hardwood we are told is under it, but I KNOW that would mean removing the birds and probably everyone else for a significant period.

Can anyone shed light on the issue and preferably point me towards a source of solid information?

Wish I knew an evidence based answer. Pete and Kim might know something. Or a vet?

I had someone who bought a conure from me last year ask me the same question. After some research and thought - plain ol' cheap carpeting that's not specialty treated seems to be no problem from the get go. The stainmaster and other stain resistant stuff supposedly needs to dry thoroughly (whatever that means) before the birds should be around it. She recarpeted her place with stainmaster carpeting and kept the bird over at her sister's house for a week to be on the safe side. We're not sure if that was really necessary. The bird's still alive and well.

Our prior RV we had the carpeting and upholstery treated with stainguard. I don't remember how long we had the RV before we first used it, but on every use it was packed with pet birds and baby birds and I didn't have any problems. We'd be in there 2 weeks at a time.

Sorry, it's not the solid info you're seeking. Maybe contact the manufacturer (twice!) and get their input on pet safety?

If we're putting it in for sales purposes, plain old cheap stuff will probably be fine, as long as its not TOO tacky. Just want it to look nice for show...

As a follow up -
My thoughts and research were only on the carpeting itself, not on the installation process or padding. Not sure if there's different ways of installation that involve various adhesives or toxic chemicals. Same with the carpet pads. Don't know much about the whole carpeting process other than picking up the phone to make the installation appointment and picking the type of carpeting.

You'll need to discuss with the installers if there's anything of concern.

Nothing to do with carpeting, but might be helpful info in general -
A couple of years ago hubby, EC and I renovated an old rental. Apprx. 1200 sq. ft. Fresh paint throughout, put in faux hardwood floors which had some sort of under padding, vinyl tiling in the kitchen and bathrooms. We spent about a month there which included spending the nights. Ducky was with us the whole time and he's still alive today. Albeit he seems to be growing some horn nubbins. . . Just kidding. . .

If the weather's warm enough, open windows and get fans blowing and I think you'd be fine.

Carpet installation is usually pretty benign... It's usually on tack rails, and the padding is usually a roll-out sheet type thing. And it's easy enough to have them out for the day. It's more whatever the materials might let loose into the air when first unrolled after storage...I think.

Horn nubbins eh? Maybe I should check Scoo for those....
