PostSubject: New Summer Job!   Sun Apr 15, 2012 12:26 am

Well, I've been applying EVERYWHERE for a job here in Thunder Bay. The job I have had is only seasonal - they only need a pizza cook for the school year.

For me to stay here, I need a job to support myself. If I can't, well then I'm stuck being home from may until august, which most of you know just isn't an option.

So now I am officially a full timeworker at a fast food restaurant ( not my first choice, but beggars can't be choosers). I start next week after exams. My first shift on Saturday is from 8pm-4am - gross, I know, but I need the money.

Right now I'm on break for my university job. My shift was only for 4-7:30, but everyone for the residence diner called in sick, so I volunteered. I'm here until 2am. Which is kind of exhausting. I'm stuck making subs, which I suck at. But, all the students are high and drunk (I'm not joking) so no complaints.

I can't wait to go home and sleep...but tomorrow is another day at work, and I need to study hard for my anthropology final on Monday.

Felt like sharing Smile

Congratulations!

I read that like three times before deciding on the appropriate response!

Fast Food restaurants aren't actually all that bad, from what I hear (I've always done call center work). I have friends who have been working at McDonald's for the last 7 years, manage their location and make more money than I could ever dream of. Also, they have benefits.

I was there watching an orientation (watching videos about customer service for 3 hours straight), and I could overhear the conversations between my future co-workers. They were singing a song from the sound of music, as a reference from family guy. They started asking if that was even a real song. I could of gotten up, and punched them all in the face. Damn kids!

I kind of hate the idea of "working for the man". I actually got an email today from the place I really wanted to work for - a chip truck-esque restaurant. My family owns chip trucks, and I LOVE working for them. This place is big on buying locally and fresh ingredients. But, I'd get more shifts from the fast food place.

I'd make more money at the fast food place. Plus, the other place is seasonal, only open from may-labour day weekend. With the fast food place, I can keep working part time when school starts up again in the fall.

Since you put this in the Celebrations forum, I'll say:

CONGRATULATIONS!!!
wee Happy Yes

The shift you're working doesn't sound great, but hey... I've worked the same shift ... for a LONG time ... and the money CAN be good. Take advantage of it while you're still young enough to work those insane hours! I can't do it anymore - I'd probably accidentally kill someone. Sad

So yay you! That's great news!

When I was in school, I decorated cakes at Dairy Queen; then when I graduated, I was still decorating cakes, and working at the pet store full time - at one point I had 3 jobs to barely survive. The night shift was ok as long as I kept busy cleaning and whatnot & no, I wasn't friends with the other staff (they just hid in a corner and slept) - I was there to work.

Before the first shift, I asked people how one could sleep during the day...after that first shift, I had NO problem sleeping during the day.

It was rough at times as I bussed across the city, walked up to 45 minutes from one bus stop to the pet store (buses ran every hour, if that, near where I worked), slept in 3-4 hour intervals, between shifts, still had time to tend to the zoo (reptils, chinchillas, and birds - oh my!), have a little bit of a social life, and I was more awake then than I am now (mind you, I tack on 4-6 hours 3-4 weeknights & 16 hour days on weekends for CBT after my Clark Kent Day job & tending to the zoo & walking the pups with Husband).

Ergh, let's just say fast food will pay the bills and keep you independant Smile And if you do a good job, you'll have enough shifts during the school year along with rank for better shifts later on.

You do what you have to do Smile

You will have to visit when you visit Ottawa though!

Rub your job finding luck off on me, please! 500+ applications later and I am still looking. Sad

Not sure if I'll even be heading to Ottawa at all this summer. My family has decided to drag the trailer and drive up here for a week. But I guess we'll see. Smile

That sucks Kaela. Have you just been sending resumes via email? I know people are more likely to hire if you go in in person. Good luck!

A lot of the places I'm applying to would require me to relocate to another state. Kind of difficult to apply in person that way!

So, I've been working there for a week now.

I'm actually starting to really enjoy working cash. Most of the time people are really nice and patient. But, I'm finally getting a hang of working those touch screen computers, so I'm finally taking orders at a fast pace.

Something that I have been questioning is my safety at the job.

Thunder Bay is known for its crime, murder, and drug use. About every other day or so when I go into work there is an incident. People coming in in altered mind states (heavily drugged or drunk) and causing trouble.

I was working on cash once, and this man who was on some kind of drugs started demanding a burger. He didn't have any money, and started screaming at me. I was petrified. I thought he was going to attack me. The manager came out and they called the police.

For the rest of the night I was a bit shaken. But everyone seemed to think this was normal.

Weird.

I dealt with stuff like that waitressing all the time. I've had chairs, table, all kinds of things thrown at me.

Best advice is to keep your calm and call the police.

it's not just there zaza, it is everywhere these days...2 weeks ago there was a drug bust on the main street and shots were fired (population 33,000)....i guess what you experienced is the norm...so have a plan of escape if something should happen and don't worry...work should be fun...

Your safety comes first. If you have lots of people around you and good support from the manager, it may be OK. Certainly conflict is part of dealing with "the public". Being yelled at is one thing, but what are the statistics involving random violent crime against restaurant workers? Is there a real statistical likelihood of something happening, or is it just unpleasant? If you really believe you are in significant danger, that's something to pay attention to.

(You will get used to do so and will continue do 2-3 different jobs Wink)

In the fall I'll be working 2 part time jobs while going to school full time. Fast food restaurant, and working for the school's student union for 10 hours a week. It's going to be a busy year!
