Hi all!

Several people kindly invited me to join here. I haven't been dragging my feet, I was just up to my ears in work until last Friday and then on a plane Sunday. Wheeee! Currently sitting in a fairly dead exhibit hall at the American Astronomical Society in Boston, wondering if it would be possible to cross into parrot behaiorism at this late date.

I'm Deborah from the great wasteland known as Southern California, the Pasadenaish par thereof. My husband and I have a very talkative and opinionated Green-cheeked conure accidentally named Scooter and a Cape Parrot (brown-necked perhaps) intentionally named Death Valley Scotty.

Aw shucks! Thanks for the warm welcome! Roger, you were closest to the money, but mostly I've just been really busy with work and travel -- and will be for a few more weeks. Got home from 5 days in Boston last night and of course Scooter is mad at me. Sigh. He actually let me pick him up at 11 last night when we got home, but by this morning he was doing his Angry Birds routine.

Scotty's beak is A-OK. Once that hanging bit was off and he'd had a couple of days to recover from the whole stress thing, he never looked back! He was so happy to see us last night, he went through all his "Hello's" and his "I like you" sounds.

How Scooter got his name accidentally? Well, he was our first fid together and my husband had named all his previous birds after alcoholic beverages, so we were searching for a name like Captain Morgan and in the meantime calling him Scooter, which is an all-purpose nickname around here. By the time we were homing in on a name, he surprised us by saying "Scoo-scoo" one day, so we figured we were just stuck, and Scooter he is. "Pretty Scoo-scoo" is his favorite battle cry!

Well I'm glad you came here as opposed to not posting anywhere again! As I poted elsewhere on here, I have a Social Work background and pride myself on being able to see both sides of any argument, er, discussion. When someone a rational, well thought out point of view, this becomes very easy (whether I agree or not). Your posts in those tough kinds of discussions have always been well thought out and based in facts, not opinions or emotion. That seems to be in short supply nowadays. Once again, good to have you here!

That's not to say that the rest of us nuts can't come up with the occasional good idea now and then thinking (speaking mostly for myself here!)

The feeling here is so much more relaxed and dare I say it, fun. I know we all come here to learn from each other, but isn't it easier to learn when you are having fun?

No, he's actually worse this time, but I may start another thread on that. He stepped up out of the cage for me this morning, finally, but he wasn't really "himself". I'm bummed because I've got another overnighter out of town this weekend, although my husband will be home. I'm hoping when I get home this evening (soon, actually) he'll be happy to see me...

I can't really see taking him on business travel-- I'm not sure how much happier he'd be with plane travel and being left alone all day in a hotel room (where who knows what the housekeeping staff might do). I just hope I can figure out a key to making it less of a big deal. This weekend shouldn't be too bad as Bill will be home and it's only two nights. He's starting to come around again now, but is still kind of cranky and nippy -- then again, he's a welter of pinfeathers all over his head.
