| I'm not seeing much reference to peer reviewed sources in that. And there are some rather large holes I could poke at. However, while I'm not particularly worried about cancer from new carpet, I am concerned about the effect of VOCs on birds. Do you know of any sources that quantify VOC emission from carpet as a function of time?
The author doesn't seem to understand that most of the "toxic chemicals" are related to the stain resistant treatments. Some may be residual from the manufacture of the polyester or nylon fiber.
Volatiles are called that because they are, well, volatile. The smell should go away fairly rapidly, and the odorless volatiles should mostly go away on the same timescale. The question is, how long does it take? And can one find a carpet installer that will "air out" the carpet before installing it?
We actually do plan to replace some carpet. Two of three of the rooms will get wood or tile flooring (pre-finished), but the living room and master bedroom will get new carpet. With central A/C I really have no idea how much too worry.

Yeah. We got a new RV years ago and elected for the Scotch Guard treatment. We had the RV for about two weeks before we took a week long trip with the birdies in it. That wasn't any problem at all. Try this site? http://www.carpet-rug.org/
