| Why are caiques cakes? Don't get it. Anyways! I've been wanting a pair of BH cakes again. Looks like tomorrow I'll be getting 1/2 of my pair! Then it'll be off to sexing it and locating a love match! | |

| Roz, did you thought a long time about caiques, or it was sort of impulse? I see about birds, that when I think too much, I start to find nos and when I do it as a compulsive buyer... :LyzGrace: | |

I see about birds, that when I think too much, I start to find nos and when I do it as a compulsive buyer... :LyzGrace: I had a pair of cakes before. Loved them! Nestbox malfunction and I lost my female so I sold the male. I've been jonesing for another pair since. Generally I research the birds I want very thoroughly before I get them. Even then, sometimes it ends up a mistake - Like the time I got a pair of lorikeets. I knew all about their care and feeding. I had thought long and hard for a couple of years before getting them. I thought I could do it. Reading and researching and understanding the care is a lot different than living with them.

That's why I like Conures If it's about quiet cakes are WAY quiet compared to conures. They're just meth fiends energy level wise.

| Frequency or volume? Volume I think the caiques are louder. Frequency I think the caiques vocalize less often. Remember, I used to have a pair of maroon bellies and a pair of GCCs. | |

OK, Now I'm interested too. I've got JJ who grumbles so that I can barely hear her 99% of the time, then a couple (literally only one or two) times a day will let loose with a contact call that carries for miles. But it's such a sweet sound (clear and high pitched, it's actually a rather pretty little sound. Maybe she's abnormal?), the fact that it just damaged my hearing doesn't bother me. Energy-level wise, she's fun. She's got energy enough to keep up with the kids (I'm not too hard to keep up with), but is still really happy to sit and snuggle with me when it's snuggle time. Is JJ normal? How does a "cake" (I've never heard them called that before) compare to the only GCC I know?

| Probably as loud as a sun conure, but the tonal quality is very very different. My husband HATES the sun/jenday calls, but he likes the caiques. He's full on board with getting caiques; he's probably cringe and go buy another pack of earplugs if I said I was getting another sun.
JJ sounds like he doesn't vocalize much even for a GCC. Sometimes the birds' frequency increases once they get closer to 1 year old, and I don't think that frequency increase is necessarily a learned bad behavior. Some birds mature a bit and then their "normal" frequency comes out. Anyone else with thoughts on this, please pipe up!
Caiques are supposedly prone to being aggressive and bitey. I never kept one for a pet so I really don't know. Again, I think it also has to do with owners providing boundaries for acceptable behavior. My prior male was super tame and I could play with him and scritch him all the time. Even breeding the pair was not aggressive towards me, whereas the conures it's an every day hazard to feed and water. I knew someone with a pet caique. He was a sweetheart to everyone (so it seemed), but she said he's get in ornery moods, start hopping up and down like caiques do (it is SO cute if you've ever seen it. The bounce like those wind up chattering teeth.), and then he'd hop over and bite the first person he saw.
GCC's are snuggly. But I don't think as snuggly as a sun/jenday. The caiques are snuggly, but they don't necessarily sit there for long periods of time snuggling like any of the conures. Of course this could just vary from individual to individual. Ducky's actually not a very snuggly sun. Ducky's high energy and wants to play instead of snuggle. He is the least snuggly sun I've ever met. So that's why I say some of these traits could just be variation from individual to individual.

| Mmm I see! The Caiques I've heard on YT sound like very loud smoke alarms. I was looking at cakes a while back, but got way too worried with aggression issues with other birds. The last thing I want is have to be stressed about my birds' lives on a daily basis. | |

| What is with the flakes? I saw this guy's add for like 2 weeks looking to get rid of the caique. He knew I was driving an hour and a half to get the bird. 45 minutes into the drive I get a text that he's changed his mind. So no cake for me. | |
