| We needed a new outside aviary at the new house so my son ,82 yr old mother and 79 yr old uncle built this one. It's 12' x 24' and has a shell floor, i hope to pour concrete floor soon with sloped floor, catch basin and inside water hookups. This space is mainly for breeder amazons in their own cages. The 1" x2" wire on the outside is to keep out larger pest and "pool enclosure" screen wire on the inside for smaller stuff.I would like to use SS screen in the future but will cost about 350 bucks. All of the seams in the roof, sides and foundation have been sealed to keep out the small pest, and the 2x12s buried in the shell should stop stuff from tunneling in.That and a big dog from the pound. We think this will work fine and hope the breeder birds enjoy the sunshine, fresh air and being left alone, i know we'll enjoy not having them in the house. It took us about 5 days of not working too hard to finish.Enjoy the pics. | Hey Roz, the next project is a walk-in for the tiels.I was thinking i might section off an area to put breeder cages and then just keep everyone in a big flock, fully flighted. That'd be a cool place to hang. | |

| Looks awesome!! Curious though, is there a reason for why the top is completely roofed? | |

| Yes maam,it gets plenty of PM sun and heat also an issue. The roof is (i hope)ant, roach, mosquito and mouse proof. My birds are too valuable to loose to disease and in close quarters the need to keep clean is paramount. Where i live there is a large raccoon population ,and you have no idea what an adversary they can be.(large dog from pound) | |

| 5 pairs, they have sheet metal "curtains" between them so they can't see each other. | |

| May I just say: WOW! I bet they'll be happy there. I have to change state for warmer climate all year round in the future | |

Glass Onion you need to understand that the pairs will be in cages this is not a flight aviary if they were to come in contact with each other they would fight and the result would be disastrous. This is a much better space than a room with a window.

I've been wanting to put together another walk-in. I have the frame for it. You had me plotting all last night where to put it and getting it together!

| Having grown up in Florida, I did wonder about keeping the palmetto bugs away from the birds. I know I'd have to amp my housekeeping skills up dramatically to have parrots in FL. Those giant roaches are the one thing that drives me to screaming meemees, and they seem to be able to get in the smallest of places. I always figured if I lived there as an adult, the first thing I'd do is tape up every single baseboard and cabinet, behind the molding, around the electrical sockets... I hope to hear that your screening efforts have been successful! | |

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the tree frogs In Gulf Shores, Al. Capt's Mom used to put moth balls in sand crab holes to get rid of them until she saw them catch and eat a Palmetto bug from that day on she thinks they are the bomb ... maybe a sand pile around the aviary?????

What does a sand pile do? Provide a home for the sand crabs (ghost crabs) that eat Palmetto bugs... this was just a tongue-in-cheek post we will not be creating sand piles around the aviary.

| Clearly my problems with FL are attributable to the lack of ghost crabs and tree frogs!!! | |

| Can I ask why the concrete floor? Is it just to keep out the nasties? I know our birds would love a dirt/grass floor to dig and play in. Looks like an amazing aviary, feel free to post it my way, it's make a wonderful garden shed ... | |

| Concrete floor so i can hose it off quick and easy as to not disturb the breeder birds who are in their own cages. | |
