Idiotic people.......

I went to a pet store yesterday to play with some birds, and there was a man with a young daughter looking to buy a pair of Budgies.

He said that he lost his last pair because he took them outside to a tree in his backyard, left them there to forget about them, and when he returned, they had apparently flown away. So he wanted for another pair. He didn't seem to grasp the idea that birds instinctively fly away when startled.

He left the store with two beautiful Budgies. They'll end up dead. *sigh*

Or even that birds fly because they, oh, I don't know... HAVE WINGS?

WTH?

I'm sorry but that is completely moronic and irresponsible!

I dislike when people think just because budgies are small parrots, that they're less of a parrot than, for example, and African Grey. It's the unfortunate result of a disposable society.

I would be heart broken if Stryder (our tiel) flew away - he's my little buddy!

I mention in some other topic, that prices for budgies are too low. Seriously, some dumb people see $20 "deal", o what the heck, it's only $20...
On the other hand, the person mentioned by GO had to be absolutely idiot without imagination, even more: without brain and heart.

This breaks my heart. The poor kid too is not going to learn any better either with parents like that.

I was in a pet store once admiring a pair of sun conure babies - so sweet! Two girls were watching me handle them and wanted to hold one as well but freaked out when the bird explored her hand with its beak... and it broke my heart to leave the birds there because I knew that after a few weeks of having stupid people mishandle them they'd probably learn to become biters. : (

The little girl was laughing and jumping around when one of the Budgies freaked out and starting flapping around in panic.

And people don't even think of budgies as small parrots. They're just parakeets. They don't even realize that they are indeed parrots.

I want to start a budgie rescue

I did.. That's when he gave me the blank look and said, "whaa- but if they're trained, why would they fly away?"

I went to a bird store to talk/play with the african greys and other birds and this guy kept asking the lady who worked their to open the cages so he can play with the birds. He took one of the birds out and was like running around with it (the guy was like 30) and he was acting like he knew everything. He "accidently" dropped the bird and when the bird tried to land on one of the near by cages he like tried to grab and he hit the poor bird into the cage bars and fell on the ground. The worker ran over and picked it up and was looking at, then the guy comes over and is like can i take out one of the african greys. I couldn't stand it and i had to walk out of the bird room. My face was like .

Exactly - just like how people think hamsters aren't "really" important pets either. And so many people don't realize how smart these birds are!!! And so they lock them in cages for their entire lives with minimal interaction or toys and then the people get bored with them or taunt them because they think it's funny to see them react. Grrr! To know how trusting such a small creature can be really makes me feel responsible and awed.

Note: I said "awed", not "odd"!
