Pasta! Empty
PostSubject: Pasta!   Pasta! EmptySat Nov 19, 2011 7:14 pm

Today is my dads birthday so Patrick and I made lasagna. So I made a little for Zada and she absolutely loves it! Its nothing fancy but I thought I would share just because Zada is going pasta-crazy over here!
I just used 1 lasagna noodle cut it half and i put tomato sauce, just plain, nothing in it, in the middle. With minced garlic, bell peppers, carrots, and green beans. And then I put more tomato sauce on the top. Yumm yumm!

Macaws can have beef...and chicken and pork and fish.... pretty much any meat you eat. On saturdays at the rescue John buys a stack of pizzas for the volunteers and the one that the birds attack is the one with all the meatballs, cheese and sausage on it. But yeah, pasta... food of the goods for most birds, especially if you add the sauce and cheese.

Scotty loves pasta with tomato sauce, too. We don't eat it often enough because my husband is on this "carbs make you fat" kick which makes me insane, but that's a whole 'nother deal. Both birds also get dry veggie pasta (spinach, tomato) in their dry food mixes. It was the first non-seed item I saw Scooter go for.

For people lasagna that's easy to make, I like this recipe:

No-boil lasagna noodles (Barilla makes good ones)
Jar of good quality marinara sauce
Pint container of Part-skim ricotta
A cup or two of shredded mozzarella
Good quality parmesan
Veggies of your choice, thinly sliced if raw. Leftover oven-roasted veggies work great. I like to use spinach, sliced mushroom, roasted bell pepper, eggplant. Enough for 2 layers, not too thick or the lasagna will be too wet.
Thinly sliced sausage if you want some meat in it.

Put sauce in bottom of lasagna pan, add layer of noodles straight from the box. Layer sauce over, then veggies, then cheese, then more noodles for a total of 3 layers of pasta. Put more sauce on the top and cover with a layer of cheese. Bake according to package directions for noodles. They absorb water from the sauce and veggies and cook up nicely.

You can make this more or less splurgy or spa-like by adjusting the amount and type of cheese. It works pretty well with reduced fat ricotta but not IMO with fat-free.
