For me, I don't really like cats. I mean, I'd rather have one than nothing, but don't feel an affinity for them in general.

love cats!
I don't care for guinea pigs or most chinchillas (I've met one exception so far). I'm sure there are more animals that I wouldn't jump to bring in my home but I can't think of them right now..

Guinea pig=snake food (sorry to someone here. I know there's a piggy fan here.)
Iguanas - They're cheap so I think people get them without really thinking about how darn big they really get and the housing involved when they get that big. And the males a lot of times are really obnoxious and dangerous. I know of a 6' male teen whose arm got broken by his adult male iguana when it whipped him with its tail.
Hedehog - cute face, but the "boringest" pet I've ever had. Didn't like to be handled so I was constantly poked.

Otherwise, almost everything's pretty cool.

Iguana's are awesome and fun to take on walks until they try to bolt up a tree...! but I agree the housings a bit of a pain. I thought they were fine if you handled them a lot but the only one I know is an adult male who can be a pain if he gets squirmy but is a sucker for a head rub and by far my favorite reptile.
agree on the hedgehog bit. they have that cool factor at first but thats about it and plus I don't think they're even legal in Cali.

I had hedgehogs and they were a blast. You have to get them used to being handled, once they are they can be as much fun as a hamster. Mine ran in a wheel, played with toys, snuggled with me, it was great!

We have had Guinea pigs too (not offended Roz!), and I think that for a pet for children there is nothing better! They are bigger than a hamster or gerbil and much easier to handle for small hands, they are not moody like hamsters, they will just sit with you and watch TV if you want.

Not a big fan of the reptiles. We have had them in the past (turtles, snakes, etc.), but not a lot of interaction from my perspective. Also not a fan of ferrets. We had one of those too, little ankle biter (literally), not a friendly animal (my experience only).

I had a hedgehog... Absolutely adorable and was even letterbox trained, BUT had poopy feet daily and just smeared poop everywhere it went and it just smelled like poop everyday.. I think the average hedgehog isn't very 'pet material'.

I was limited in my choice of hedgehogs. I wish I could have gotten a more socialized hedgie. I'd love them if they were as Roger described. I felt bad for the hedgie since I couldn't really play with it/it didn't like to be played with so I did enrichment for it; one of which was sprinkling mealworms in the litter and setting other insects loose for it to forage. She didn't eat anything but cat food and insects only if you held them in front of her face. Wouldn't forage. Hard not to feel guilty about keeping an animal like that. I didn't feel I could give it a "satisfied" life.

Piggies - Again, if I could get one that was all mellow and nice, I'd probably like them. All the ones I've had have been skitterish and squealing. I met a couple at a breeders that were nice and calm. But the breeder wanted $100 each. I'm not paying $100 for a guinea pig.

Moa - you have to check out a tame, socialized adult bearded dragon. Great size, easy care, and docile. I had mine trained to "come on command" (not really, just stimulus/response. He'd run to me when I tapped my finger.) and to sit up on its hind legs like a begging dog when it got to me.

I've never really been moved to keep reptiles, but I don't dislike them. I have a friend who has an Iguana called Tiberius which is now over 3' long! I always wanted a skunk, I think they are adorable, but I don't think I'd seek out anything any wilder than a parrot at this point. I never really thought I wanted birds, though, and look what happened!

I've had some "exotic" family members before: chincillas, iguana, bearded dragon.

I wouldn't be too keen on mice, bats, or skunks...or a chimpanzee...

"Micro Pigs"

Don't get me wrong, I actually love pigs. But the idea, that there are these little handheld pigs that can happily live in your house is LUDICROUS. They are Vietnamese Pot Bellied Pigs. They are only micro when they are babies. They are monsters when they grow up. Google it.

ha, yours sound cool! I like beardies but the ones I know aren't as interactive as the iguanas and they don't really seem to enjoy company as much. But, well, I guess that's why I have a parrot Smile If I do get a lizard at some part it'd probably be a beardie or a leopard gecko even though I'm still an iguana fan at heart.

I knew one that got too big to be in a house so she came to live at the barn. She was called Spam (Spamela) and my horse adored her. She was still a very fun creature, but it would be like keeping a mini horse in the house, not really house pet material.

I think the problem with keeping apes or monkeys as pets is very similar to the difficulties of keeping birds, only they are typically a lot bigger and stronger.

Eeesh, chimps... I highly dislike chimps, monkeys, gorillas, etc. and not just as pets. Would never want one. Other than chimps, anything that has a reasonable chance of killing me. No lions, tigers, bears (oh my!), big ole snakes, water monitors, crocodiles, etc. Exotics just don't call to me, I guess. Regular non-exotic pets, I don't think there are any I would mind. There are a lot that I wouldn't try to get, so I guess I'm "not a fan" of them, but I wouldn't really mind having them.

Well. . . 100/150# IS small for a pig. . .

I used to have a pair of 6' boa constrictors. When it was feeding day, I'd tell my husband to come look for me if I wasn't back in 10 minutes just in case they got me. I used to want a water monitor, but the thought of it possibly eating EC when she was little wasn't too appealing.

I'd rather have my face bitten by a cockatoo, then have it bitten by a chimp.

I'm curious as to why being injured by a bird seems less horrible than being injured by a chimpanzee? I kind of get it, but I think maybe there is something in our lizard brains that says something that much like me shouldn't bite my face off, and if it does, it's Hannibal Lector.

I am extremely fond of the great apes, but I really wouldn't want to try to keep one as a companion. They are very intelligent and social and I think trying to provide an adequate life and enrichment for one to be truly happy would be very difficult indeed. As babies, they are cute, much like human babies. But as adults, it would be too much like caring for a developmentally delayed adult human lacking language and from a different culture. Not my idea of a fun time and pretty much a full time job. I am a bit surprised at this point that I didn't go into primate language studies as that would have fascinated me to no end, but as a pet in a home setting... no way.

Yeah. Apparently when chimps attack they maim the face and genitals. The show "Fatal Attractions" did an episode on primates.

While some people have suffered broken fingers, toes, nerve damages, stitches, etc. generally no missing body parts from birds.

I've had pretty much every weird pet, aside from a pig or a chinchilla. I've had ferrets, snakes, iguanas, tarantulas, fish... can't say that I wasn't a fan of any of them, though they definitely don't have the cuddle/love draw of cats, dogs and birds. Horses too.

Yes. People have been mauled by pet dogs, too. The first face transplant was for a French woman who was attacked by a dog. People are killed working with horses... to me it isn't the danger aspect specifically, it's the fact that they are close kin genetically, it bothers us more somehow.
