A 6.5 will only shake you into the ocean if you live where the building codes aren't up to EQ standards... it'll take an 8.something before I slide in... But at least hurricanes give some warning, a quake can happen at any moment.

Good point. Additionally, for the most part hurricanes don't do the same amount of damage to infrastructure that earthquakes do and any damage that is done is typically able to be repaired faster because utility companies are able to pre-stage in areas expected to be hardest hit. (Please notice that I'm qualifying my statements with "for the most part" and "typically," so no political retorts please.) None of this is true with earthquakes. Because it's not uncommon for a large amount of a cities infrastructure to be built underground, and because earthquakes happen (drum-roll please!) underground (!), and because it can be more difficult to effect necessary repairs when they're ... underground (!), it seems clear to me how an earthquake has the potential to be a far more devastating event than a hurricane.

"Riding out" a hurricane in a coastal town is on my bucket list, but I also think it'd be interesting to experience an earthquake. One year I'd like to move to the east coast during hurricane season for a chance to experience one of those storms, but I'd never move to California just to experience an earthquake. They scare me!
