How do keep your ups and downs from hurting your birds? Empty
PostSubject: How do keep your ups and downs from hurting your birds?   How do keep your ups and downs from hurting your birds? EmptySun Oct 02, 2011 3:23 pm

I haven't posted a lot about Scotty and Scooter lately because I've been so deeply entrenched in major life stress. I hardly feel like myself right now, and my husband is depressed to a worrying degree, he's worse than I am and that's bringing me down further. He has a history of fairly severe depression and he is on meds. I don't think he's really likely to do something rash, but it's definitely wearing on me. I also don't feel like I know which direction to jump in and I have moments of wishing I had no husband and no companion animals so I could just pack everything up and move on. As a result I'm making zero progress on any of the changes I wanted to make with the birds' routine and with the training I've been wanting to do, and while I'm getting all the day to day stuff done for them and giving them some attention, most of their out of cage time right now is hanging out on the cages while I peruse job listings or play solitaire or Angry Birds and try not to think about it. I'm afraid if I'm not careful they'll regress into complete non-socialization, but I just can't face another project right now. By the time I've given morning scritches, changed dry food and water, changed cage paper, cleaned the cat box, given them fresh water and cleaned up the food dishes, chopped up the fresh fruit and veggies and done Pepe's SQ fluids (he came home from the thyroid treatment on prophylactic fluids and I'm beginning to fear he'll be one of the cats that has kidney shutdown after the thyroid stops over-pushing them, just what we need since we lost Ariel to renal failure in August) I'm not up for much but to let S&S out for 20 minutes and get ready for work. Then it's usually an hour or two of out but not deeply interactive time when I get home.

Aside from the whole job thing, with the latest blow (did I mention the reorganization) being a kind of camel-back-straw thing -- after 22 years with the same small organization, it feels personal, like a divorce rather than a layoff -- heck it feels like a betrayal-- but at the same time half a job in this economy is probably not something to throw away lightly-- Ahem, aside from the whole job thing, Bill's sister's cancer is clearly beginning to get the better of her and it's just a way tough time right now for both of us, and it affects the whole rhythm of the household.

Am I likely to do irreparable damage to the birds? Or can I pick up where I left off when things are a bit more settled? I know I will feel a lot better when I know what direction I'm going in. I've never liked the sensation of free fall. Last night I dreamed Scooter set his wing on fire by flying to the gas stove. I think my subconscious is worried!

Take it from someone who - moved out of parents' home, moved into an apartment, school full time, work part-time, got married, moved into a house, got pregnant, had a baby - all while having the same 2 tiels, conure, CAG and later added 2 cockatoos at the "got married" part - You're doing fine. It's amazing how resilient and adaptable they are. My time then and now with the birds was not non-stop face time for hours on end. It was a lot of what you're doing and then I'd rotate daily which bird was getting more one-on one time with me when I showered, piddled around the house, going out and about, etc. And when EC was a wee baby the birds did a lot more hanging out in the same room and just observing us. Whenever I pass a feathered being, I'd reach out and talk and scritch which would be about it. The thing I think that was important is that they were INCLUDED in daily activities even if they were not actually getting complete focus and attention. I think the antisocial regression happens when you leave them in their cages, ignored and not included.

i have to agree with roz...just being near the birds is enough for them...they just need to know you are there...as for the rest, relax...que sera sera...no sense worrying about things that may or may not happen...i have been through 2 plant closures and felt the same way, but everything worked out ok in the end

I must agree with PDB ,my fids seem to be pretty resilient to the changing fortunes of life. Some days it rains and some days the sun shines. When life stress me i find some focus in interacting with Jake, she's been around enough to know us well enough to know when life is beating us up and she seems to come up with that little spark that makes you smile and know the sun will shine again. Keep the fids near the center of activity and they'll be OK.

You're not perfect. Don't try to be.

I'm still unemployed since my layoff Thanksgiving 2009. . . Hunker down and know you're among friends - This too, shall pass.

p.s. Pass a hug to Bill, too.

This is important. Focus on the the positive things you do have in your life, and spend time with the fids when you can, how you can. I agree with what everyone has said, they seem to enjoy just being around the action, they do't always have to be in it. If you two need to focus on each other then so be it. They will understand and will get over it. Good luck, were thinking of both of you and you know you have moral support here, always.

Sometime ya jest gotta take a break. I have more on my plate than I want, but I will step back and take a break after I get through this month. It's ok to take a break from things now and then. Life tends to go a bit fast and sometimes can be overwhelming. Stay focused on jest whats important to you. I wish you the best.
