Good wishes for Pepe, please Empty
PostSubject: Good wishes for Pepe, please   Good wishes for Pepe, please EmptyTue Oct 25, 2011 6:42 pm

So, it's 6 weeks since Pepe Le Pew had his radioiodine treatment, and it appears he's one of those rare cases that needs a second dose to eliminate the thyroid tumor. His thyroid hormone levels are still elevated (T4=8.Cool and his behavior is making everyone including himself insane -- so I get to brave the traffic once again tomorrow and haul him down to West LA for a re-scan. They'll do the re-scan for free and if the thyroid is still enlarged, will re-treat at half price.

Since the thyroid lesion appeared benign the first time around, there is a good chance he will be cured this time, but he has gotten SO very thin, I'm a little worried about the additional strain on his system overall as it will still likely be another couple of weeks before he normalizes even if successful. He's down to 12 pounds and is very bony. He's a big cat that was just about right at 20lbs. He's 14, and so far he appears healthy in all other respects. At the one-month check his kidney function was still looking A-OK, although one of his hyperthyroid symptoms is sink obsession and the longer he goes uncorrected the more I worry we are cooking his kidneys....

So good thoughts for him, please.

I could also use a little less stress in my life. I have an interview at a local community college tomorrow afternoon, to teach one evening class next semester in an attempt to bolster both income and CV. I asked if it was possible to reschedule, knowing there is some risk in even asking, but if they say no, I'll have to get up early, battle traffic to get to West LA by 11 (it's only 20 miles, but in LA AM traffic, it can take 2-3 hours) come back to do the interview at 4:30 and then possibly drive back to WestLA to pick him up in the evening if the scan shows the thyroid is reduced but slow to normalize (probably unlikely). I'm finding this a functional definition of nightmare, and am having a hard time working up my 10-minute sample lecture on the phases of the moon. Plus I had to cancel my haircut appointment and will have to interview in shaggy mode.

I've also applied for two internal jobs, but they are dragging their feet scheduling the interviews. End of next week I'm off to Paris for a meeting, which would normally be just plain fun, and a last hurrah of sorts... since my income is slated to drop to half on the 28th.

Don't worry, he'll be fine. I have been through that. Docs thought also about second time RAI, but gave up that fought(Thank Goodness!)
My hormons levels was going crazy for a long time, and after a while they came back to normal.
S&S, forgive me, but I'm lost. Who is Pepe Le Pew? One of your cats? So after what I have read, it was thy cancer? What kind?

About going insane, I believe it's normal reaction. I was thinking at that time I would finish in a mental hospital, so many side effects. They slowly disappeared.
Fortunately, it's one of the more treatable types of cancers. You have my wishes of course! Good wishes for Pepe, please 1562621866

Pepe Le Pew is one of our cats, yes. Ariel is the cat we lost in August. Pepe is the other older generation feline, the other two are 2 and 4.

Pepe was diagnosed as hyperthyroid a couple years ago and was doing OK with medication to control it for a while. Hyperthyroidism in cats is almost always due to a benign (not malignant) tumor which over-produces thyroid hormones. So as time goes on, without treatment, it gets harder and harder to control with medication, and Pepe had reached that point. The Radioactive iodine treatment is usually a one-shot complete cure, but in rare cases, the does isn't high enough to kill off all the abnormal tissue. He seems to be one of those cases. About 15 years ago I had two cats treated, both recovered completely with a single treatment.

It's unlikely that the tumor is cancerous -- they can usually determine that from the initial scintograph prior to treatment, and his appeared completely benign.

For second-timers they do the scan free and the treatment at half cost, I just hope he's not suffered any permanent damage from the time spent off meds with the thyroid still pumping out extra hormone.

I'm sending retroactive feather-dust in your direction!

How did everything go today? (It was today, wasn't it?)

Yeah, the scan showed that the thyroid is still affected, so he's off to Orange County for another round of radioiodine treatment. This OUGHT to do the trick. Hope he eats OK during this incarceration... he can't stand to lose any more weight.
