| I am going to be doing a lot of traveling this summer. And I want to bring Zada! I am going on a road trip, flying to California, and flying to Oregon. How can I make this go as smoothly as possible? And what can Zada sleep in while we are traveling? | |

| I'd recommend getting her a smaller sleeping cage, or even training her to stay on a stand. That way you can take a sleeping cage with you when you travel and she'll already be accustomed to it. I'll post more later when I haven't just realized that it's 20 minutes till one and my kids will be here in 45 minutes expecting food! AHHH!!!! | |

| You might need to go with a large dog crate... you can usually thread perches through the slits in the plastic. I'm not sure any of the carriers I've seen are really big enough for her! I'm also not sure if she'd fit in anything you could under-seat on a plane, so air travel could be a challenge. Anyone have a bird her size and know what the solutions are? | |

| Check with airlines as well, some are more animal friendly than others. | |

| Socialize, socialize, socialize. Take her everywhere with you now and she'll be better with traveling later. Ducky gets in the car and he's happy as a clam (where did that phrase come from? I didn't even know clams had emotions.). | |

| Use of the google suggesteth that the original phrase was "Happy as a clam at high water", high water being when the clam was relatively safe from predation. | |

| I love how a thread about travel with a macaw can turn into a discussion about the etymology of "happy as a clam" on this forum... | |

| I love how a 16 year old casually throws the word "etymology" into a discussion about clams and traveling with macaws!
Back on topic: Flying may prove to be a bit of a challenge. The only time I've seen macaws in carriers, they've been in the large dog-crates. Capt can tell you how to rig one up with up with a perch, he did a very nice job when he was sending me some birds. I'd be leery about just sticking a dowel through the slats that are already there - it probably wouldn't be too secure, especially if she gets jostled around any.
While the crate would do for travel, it wouldn't do for her to live in when you get to where you're going. That's where the stand might come in handy. We have macaws at the store who stay on their stand all the time. Granted it's an 8 ft tall stand with 13 or 14 tree limbs for them to climb on, but I suppose it shows that they can be taught to stay where they're put when necessary - an important thing for our birds to know I suppose.

| I'm not sure a plastic dog crate would hold her for very long if she wanted to get out !!! | |

| I've done road trips with Merlin and he's in a Dog crate made by Midwest...it's maybe 42" x 18" x 24"? Something like that...I don't think he'd enjoy being in a plastic dog crate for long trips, as he wouldn't be able to see what's going on around him, and he would chew through it (and he's a Grey). The best are the reactions from people (especially kids) as you zoom past them with a parrot in a crate looking at them...plus it makes for a very entertaining car ride I'm no help with regards to the actual plane thing...I know there's one airline that flies your pets for you... Pet AirwaysI love how much you love Zada:) | |

| Im so sad! My grandmother, whom I was planning on staying with, HATES animals. At least she wont allow them in her house. I haven't asked her yet but she told my sister that I shouldn't have gotten Zada and that Zada is going to hold me back from doing things. So Zada isn't on her good list right now.(is it too late to use Santa Claus references?) My mom said we could stay at her place. Sigh. And as for the flying thing, I dont see how I could bring Zada as a carry on. She's just too big! Her tail is so long haha. Maybe I can buy her a plane ticket! Haha. I dont really want to have her go in cargo, but it looks like thats my only option. That, or leave her with someone. Anyone want to watch my baby? She would probably chew through a plastic dog crate. I found this: http://www.mysafebirdstore.com/product.cgi?group=902&product=9039 But its open for everyone to see that I have a parrot inside. I would have to cover it, I think. She travels fine in a car. We have a shower perch that we stick to the window and she sits on that. If we do a long road trip I am going to buy a travel carrier. I really want this barkpack, even though I will look like a big dork ahah: http://www.celltei.com/palacmasi.htmlI need to save up some money | |

| I got Merlin when I was 20, Hannah - he certainly didn't hold me back from life - he enriched (and still does!) it!! When I complained once about bills to my Dad (I had school loans, car loan, rent, groceries, etc), he said I should "get rid of the parrot" as he cost too much...his toys I made, his food bag was $25 every few months, and his fresh stuff came from what I prepared for myself (And Merlin & his cage were paid for in cash...so no debt for him). Some people just don't understand. I DO recommend joining your local parrot club (if there is one) - then you'll likely have someone trustworthy to take care of Zada if you go away on vacation alone. And hey - Zazanomore has her Fids with her AT University, so it certainly isn't hindering her either Zaza won't hold you back | |

| Zada won't hold you back, you will just need to do things differently.
I know that some (well Canadian) airlines have a cargo space for pets (as in it's heated). I've heard good things about those King Cages travel cages. But they are kind of on the expensive side.
Do you have a part time job? I know it's hard keeping up with school work and bird time with a part time job, but the extra money really helps out.

| You can define your life so that any pet, or lack of pet, holds you back -- I think the real challenge is finding workable compromises. I travel quite a bit and much of it is work related, such that bringing along a bird is just not feasible. And the cats really would prefer to be home anyway. I think with a bird Zada's size, there will be compromises. Were you to refuse to do anything without her... it might be really limiting. But i predict that you will find yourself a good backup system and you'll do some things with her, some things without her, and some things differently because of her. This is not "holding you back" it's living your life. | |

Start saving your money. I'll be auctioning her off to the highest bidder in 2 years when she emancipates. Hannah - Realistically, your grandmother's not completely wrong. A large loud bird like a macaw is going to limit you in certain ways - getting an apartment may be one. Spontaneous romantic weekend jaunts in your early adult years may be another. Moving to another country may be completely out of the picture. Just understand your realities. As for the carrier you'll be getting - line up what airline you'll be using and then get a carrier according to their guidelines Airline guidelines are generally similar, but not necesarily identical. I think one of the major airlines actually specifies how the perch is to be affixed to the carrier. American, Delta and Continental I think are the main ones for animal transportation. Some of them will require a vet certificate within a certain number of days of the flight.
