PostSubject: Moving   Moving EmptyFri Dec 30, 2011 12:03 pm

So. Problem...

I'm seriously considering the possibility of moving to the city and renting a place. Its closer to work, closer to some friends, closer to the airport, and away from annoyances. Win-win. Of course - the Captain would come with me.

However....with my current job, I would still be vanishing every spring/summer for three weeks or so at a time.

Unfortunately, my fid-sitters do not live in the city. I could probably get away with stuffing him in a carrier and bringing him to my parents on the train, which is WAY out of the way, and in the opposite direction of the airport where I would be going to next....plus...with the new cockatiel in the house using Jack's old cage, I no longer have a spare cage. And his current cage is massive....

In addition - when I get home from rotation, I would have about 10 days of free time ONLY. Where Jack would be shipped from my parents, to my place, and then back again to make my next flight....it seems time consuming and stressful on the poor guy....

I could easily get a spare cage to stash at my parents...but I'm not sure what to do about this issue.

I could try to find a fid-sitter in the city, but there is no guarantee. None of my friends in the city even like birds

You could board at a store or at a vet's office and you might be able to find a sitter through a local bird club. We use a professional pet/house sitter. In general, moving to a city should give you more options, not fewer, you'll just have to do the legwork to discover them. Good luck!

boarding at a vets is extremely expensive...and after working for a vet for a year - there is no way i would expose my boy to that. I will have to see if there is a bird club in the area.

That's what I was going to suggest, would be a good idea to get involved with local bird peeps at any rate.

What is it that you do for a living? Get a new job.

Just kidding (sort of). If you don't want to board at a vet/bird store, a lot of times they have employees that run a sitter service as a sideline.

I would definitely join the BFBS - I was part of this club when I lived in the GTA, and it was great - it's not just all about budgies, but parrots of ALL sizes!

Back when I lived in the GTA, they were still building a Subway extension (at least the route I took) which is fairly close to the club's meeting location.

You'll be able to find fellow Avian peeps, and a list of people who can help birdsit for you.

I could also put the word out that you're looking for a sitter in the city - honestly, there's a plethora of parrot people hiding out in Toronto!

...and just a thought - go On Facebook and look up old employees of Super Pet/PJ's - plenty of Avian people are missing their full avian experiences.

I also have a friend in Oakville, if you're near that area (i.e. I lived in Port Credit right off Lake Ontario - most economical rent in Mississauga and right along the Go Line if you work downtown...and there's a Burrito Boyz - life couldn't get much better!) who may be able to help you out with sitting - we used to trade sitting when I visited Ottawa and her family went on vacation.
