| Uh oh, I think I just found a bird I'd really love to add to my flock. Was noodling around on the internet and ran across the Crimson Bellied Conure... a pyrrhura, but distinct species from the GCC. They look like this: I found them at Pampered Peeps website. | |

| I've seen a lot of those on kijiji in Ottawa.
But my favorite is still the rose crowned. There's a breeder in Ottawa right now with handfed babies...one day.

| I've seen those before too. I think they're beautiful!!! I like the painted conures as well... When I win the lottery I may raise some of these. (Along with my favorite - the GCC's!)

| Maroon bellies and Green cheeks are so closely related I'm surprised they aren't subspecies. The Crimson bellies are larger as well as having that dramatic coloring. I've seen Painted's in person -- they are the smallest -- but never a Crimson Belly. Don't know WHY it appeals. My husband is no help. He just said, "Why don't you get it". Er... because I don't have time for a third bird? But don't tempt me! | |

| Two conures won't be THAT much more work than one. Perhaps Scooter won't be such a demon bird when you return from your voyages if he had a friend.. | |

| For what it is worth Sparrow is so much happier with a budgie friend. It is a change I wouldn't have believed unless I had seen him with Sushi and now Tiki. |

Yes! I agree! Additional cage cleaning IS more work! I think the work increases exponentially until you reach about five-eight cages, then you develop a rhythm and can start going through it really quick... Until you start hitting the really high numbers of course. I'm sure that's a totally different ball game. If I've got EVERYTHING together and dont get distracted (that's the hard part for me) I've gotten to where I can get 25'ish cages done (paper, grates and toys brushed, food and water dishes emptied, cleaned, filled and replaced) in about an hour to an hour and a half. Like I said, distraction is the hardest part. I always think of something I need/want/forgot/etc., right in the middle of it all and there goes the rhythm. EDIT: I still think you should get another bird!!! They're so totally worth the work!!!

| I have no doubt eventually there will be another bird. So far the right one hasn't come along.
Actually there is this poor pineapple green cheek at PetSmart I'm sorely tempted to rescue. At first it was so timid it just clung to the back of the cage where it could see the canaries and budgies through the peep holes into the little service ante-room. It completely bolluxed up it's tail rubbing it against the cage side, so that it looks like some kind of semi-peacock. Now it's much more well adjusted, and when I go in there it's generally swinging from one toy or another. But I really don't want to encourage them to get more! They went a year without carrying anything larger than a budgie, then turned over a green cheek and got this guy/gal. Plus I think pineapples are kind of ugly. So I have steadfastly resisted.

| My limit with "pet" birds seems to be 7. It's not that much more work to have 3! Just don't tack on a zero to that number. Although I personally find multiple aratinga conures to be challenging - noise wise they feed off each other. Not sure if that concern would apply to the pyrrhura conures. I can recommend someone very reputable for a crimson bellied when you're ready: http://outbackaviaries.com/conurephotos.htmlHe's more into mutations and has very healthy birds. I'm not sure how he raises babies other than handfeeding and parent raising - meaning I don't know if there's early socialization. If that's really important to you, I'd be happy to raise a baby for you super well socialized. I'm sure he'd let me have one out of the nest. Just something for your to keep in mind! | |

| I'm incorrigible, so stop incorriging me! Roz, I'd definitely like to have one that was super-socialized, so be careful what you offer! Cap'n, when my husband talks me into 'zon, you'll be the first to know. But... Where would I put the 3rd? | |

When I was at the breeder's house picking up Allie, I heard not a pyrrhura peep or pip. She had four in her living room that I could see and I know she had more in the back room. I agree with you on the aratingas. I've noticed that one calls, two respond, then four respond to those, then they're ALL squawking. - ScooterNScotty wrote:

Zaza is right. You've got plenty of room! I say take Roz up on her offer - God knows we're not getting any younger!
