When I first moved out here to the sticks, I was feeding the wild birds. After a couple of months I realized I was spending more money on the wild bird seed than on food for all my birds. I was buying about 150# of wild bird food a week. I about fainted when I realized how much I was buying. Although, if I could afford it I'd keep doing it. Gorgeous migratory birds coming through. They still come through, just not in the mass quantities as the first year I was here and feeding them a truck load. Now they just get whatever's left over from my birds.

We do the same here, we feed birds and forest animals with leftovers, often what my bf brings left from his bakery.
