Questions have been asked about how cuddly and playful big birds are. Well, here you go... a vid of Bryan playing with Merlyn. Sorry its so dark, did it on my phone. And that screaming in the background, that's Pickle, the Hahns.

How cute! But my face wouldn't be that close to a beak that big.

Vikki, this is absolutely adorable. I've always been more attracted to medium+ sized birds and haven't (yet) had a beak phobia. I never really let myself think too much about having something THAT big, though. I still think it would be too much bird for me at this point, but I love love love your pics and this video. Maybe one day

I'm weird.
I find the bigger the beak, the less intimidating.

Same!!! The little ones are more maneuverable and have more pinching power...

Totally agree. Would rather get bit by a big bird than a small one.

You all are SO bad for me, all these big birds make me want one SOOO bad. Between y'all and Jellybean the Eclectus from this past weekend I might be losing a husband and selling a kidney for a big parrot.

You don't need to sell a kidney if you can find a rescue near you. Macaws and cockatoos seem to be the birds of overabundance at rescues. I will have to check around for you and see if maybe Jeanne knows a rescue near you. The closest one in my head is Phoenix Landing and from what I read in their contacts, they have a lcoation in NC!

Glad I'm not alone! I don't know what it is. I don't mind the bigger beaks. It's the smaller ones I don't want to get near. LOL

I have to get near all kinds of beaks, regardless, and being covered in scars as I am (occupational hazard) I'd have to say the smaller ones definitely do more damage. Think about it, the smaller birds have "shredder" type beaks - pointy and sharp to be able to tear into fruit. Large birds have "breaker" type beaks - thick and blunt to be able to crack open nuts. I remember there was a time last year when we were crazy busy at the rescue and John (Jeanne's husband) was covered from elbow to wrist with scabs. He looked like a leper, LOL. But again... they're only scabs and bruises and they go away and I find the more you get bit, the less it hurts. In the beginning, especially for new bird owners, the pain is based more in fear than the actual pain. After a while, you just say "wow, I'm bleeding" and its like you don't even notice.

I can relate the desensitization to pain and blood, to my avid nail-biting habit. My fingers hurt almost everyday and I bleed almost every other day, but I just lick it off and let it dry while public strangers are giving me horrified looks. :affraid:

Maybe asians are just neurotic. I'm a big time nail biter, too. I can so relate to neurotic cockatoos.

I have heard they (along with the one in Pineville Parrot U) do not rehome within 90 miles of the adoption center nor to homes with small children. I know for a fact Parrot U does not adopt to homes with small children. Sigh. Honestly, I need to wait a few years. I do want to rehome adopt though, when the time comes.
