Need Help.

CB decided to chew my USB cable for my external hard drive. Thus, I cannot access any of the homework I keep on it. And since my interview transcript is due tonight, I need someone to answer a few questions for me.

1. Why is public speaking important to your career?
2. How do you prepare for a speech?
3. What is your current career? The career where you've made the most presentations?
4. Give me a brief overview of what your typical day looks like.
5. Do you experience any anxiety before a speech? If so, how do you deal with it?

1. Why is public speaking important to your career?

As a scientist, giving talks is an integral part of the job. Scientific talks and science conferences, presentations given to review boards for major projects, etc. And as an educator, I must speak in front of my class every time I teach. If I don't do these things well, I don't do my job well!

2. How do you prepare for a speech?

I don't think of them as speeches, but as talks or lectures. For the most part, I concentrate on preparing the underlying material. I rely on knowing the material and caring about the material to make the actual presentation compelling. Sometimes I identify places where I might make a joke or insert an anecdote, but I stopped practicing the actual talk years ago, it just makes the presentation less genuine.

3. What is your current career? The career where you've made the most presentations?

I'm a senior staff scientist at a major research university. I'm an astronomer. I'm also adjunct faculty at a community college. I gave a TON of review board presentations when I was Operations Planner and Operations Scientist for the Spitzer Space Telescope Science Center. For one review, I gave almost all the presentations for two days!

4. Give me a brief overview of what your typical day looks like.

There is no typical day, really. Depending on what is going on, when I'm in my office, I might spend the whole day in meetings, or I might spend it in front of my computer working on various documents and models. If it's a teaching day, I'm grading, developing exercises, writing exams, writing lectures, holding office hours or holding class.

5. Do you experience any anxiety before a speech? If so, how do you deal with it?

Rarely. I was nervous as hell before my first class, but I just concentrated on being prepared, and on trying to connect to individuals. In general, even if I am nervous, if I know my stuff, the anxiety disappears as soon as I get rolling.
