Females - Reminder Warning Empty
PostSubject: Females - Reminder Warning   Females - Reminder Warning EmptyWed Jun 08, 2011 9:18 pm

Yesterday I spoke to a lady who just lost her 15 yo jenday hen to egg binding. During my conversation with her, she was saying that for the last 10 years each spring she puts up a nest box for the hen to lay her eggs. This is a PET jenday. She is not a breeder. So for the last 10 years the bird's been laying infertile eggs every spring, sometimes two clutches of infertile eggs. She did not know that the bird did NOT need to lay eggs.

Reminder for everyone - Unlike us mammals that cannot control our menstrual/heat cycles, birds DO NOT need to lay eggs if environmental conditions are not right. So don't stimulate your pet hens to lay eggs. My prior jenday did not lay eggs for 12 years until I set her up with a mate for breeding, my CAG was 8 yo and never laid an egg, our prior G2 that my friend now owns is 16/17 yo and has never laid an egg.

good info! I was shocked to find my "boy" cockatiel layed an egg. We removed the nesty area she was using afterwards but she could fly and found other nest areas around the house (bookshelves, you name it) I also got my dad to stop inapropro petting on her back and wings BadEgg

Hey Moa, if she continues to lay eggs don't pull them, she wants a clutch of eggs and will keep laying if you pull them as she lays. The best thing to do is buy fake eggs and replace the first egg she lays and then add some more over the next couple of days,or let her sit her own eggs for 3-4 wks, egg laying takes a lot out of a bird and can only lead to problems.

Taking your entire hand, petting down the back, ending with fingers curling under the vent and tail. Oh, baby!!
