By cage cleaning, I'm thinking more along the lines of wiping down all surfaces, toys, perches, food dishes, etc. I wouldn't include changing newspapers or things of that sort.

Oh god, I really don't have the time or the easily accessible utilities to do it often, unfortunately.

At first I changed paper and wiped down every day, now it's more like every other. Once a week, though, I roll the cage onto the back porch, take the grate, tray, and any dirty perches and toys out, spray poopy stuff with the cleaning spray, let it soak a few minutes and take the garden hose to it. I don't know what I'll do when winter rolls around, this is such an easy method I'll be frustrated once I can't do that anymore.

Since I'm in an apartment, I put the grate, trays, perches and toys in the bathtub. The cages I wipe down with a rag and bucket of soapy water. It would be SO much easier to take them outside.

My living space is the whole basement, so it's pretty much impossible to drag anything outside. I wipe things down and take the only grate upstairs.

I think as long as you're wiping things down with hot water and a cleanser of some sort, that's fine.

Shop Vac the crusties off about every other day. Hose and scrub grating and perches about every 3 days. Two sets of food bowls that get switched out every day, possibly twice a day depending on the mess the little beasties make.

I do it on an "as needed" basis but rolling the cage outside and hosing/scrubbing it down is maybe every couple of months? I try to keep on top of it by wiping down poopy surfaces every night or so so big cleanings aren't necassary very often. Sometimes you just need a hose to spray down all those problem spots though...

Inside birds,Sunday is cage day, that said i don't have as many inside birds any more so it's not that big a deal(5 cages).Itake them outside and clean em good.Outside birds, not sure how often i'll completely scrub them out because every 2 days i shower the birds and while all is wet i scrub off the worst stuff.Outside birds have no pan under them so not so much work. We're still new here so we'll see how the program develops.

So, so about once a week is a deep cleaning, taking everything from cages, etc. Changing newspaper is about every 2-3 days, but I don't have typical schedule. When I see it's getting messy, I do it.

Cage Cleaning. Empty
PostSubject: Re: Cage Cleaning.   Cage Cleaning. EmptyTue Jul 19, 2011 9:17 pm

I voted once a week, but that's not really quite accurate. My routine is more or less:

Change cage paper once (SCotty) or twice (Scooter) a day.

Goal is to do a quick wipe of major messes every day.

Reality is that I do a major wipe-down about once a week to clean poop and fruit spray off bars, perches, grates and toys. Oh, and walls and floor.. I either use Poop-off wipes and clean things while they remain installed or, if the mess is massive, I take perches etc. to the sink.

I mean to do a steam clean or hose down every month or every other but I'm not keeping up with that. That would be strip down, take outside, hose, disinfect, etc. Scooty's cage doesn't fit outside the door without at least removing the seed guard which is bolted on.

Food and water dishes are on an as-needed basis. I rotate sets through the dishwasher. Fresh food dishes go in every use, water dishes approx weekly and dry food dishes less often. I should probably just rotate them all daily... but I don't.

I was happy to see this poll, I really wanted to trade schedules with y'all!

I wanted to clarify mine was for the indoor birds. Babies poo a lot.

The outdoor birds get the crusties knocked off and bowls changed daily, perches replaced as needed. That's about it for outdoor birds.
