so, um, what the title says. I let people hold rainbow but any tips for showing/telling them how to handle birds? Unfortunately she doesn't seem to like man-hands (she's adorable with my female friends and lets them pet her but bites all my dad's friends...) but otherwise seems pretty good with strangers

My WBC Zigger love almost everybirdie. He does however not like my good friend. Last time she was over, he jumped on her shoulder a bit her. He is a very gentile bird, so I'm glad that he didn't bite her to mame her. He will be put away next time she is over.

You know, I've had different reactions with different people.

Einstein reacts well with people who know how to act around birds. With people who are confident, he's stepped up, sung to and asked for cuddles.

However, with people who are scared of him, he'll start flying around and will act defensive.

At this point if I could get Merlin to go to anyone else willingly, I'd consider it a victory.

If the bird doesn't seem keen on the person petting it, I tell the person don't pet it. I haven't had any problems with the bird just perching on a person's hand if I'm passing the bird off to the person. I'm respectful of the bird not wanting a certain person to pet it.

When passing off a bird to stranger, if the person doesn't know how to hold their hand or something I'll hold their hand still with my free hand and then put the bird on their hand.

Sparrow will go to anyone, but he dosn't overly enjoy everyone. He is really good and sensing how they feel. He responds well to confident people who interact with him. There is a lady at the bird store who grooms him that after they are done she spends some time with him and he cuddles up to her neck while I play with other birds. He can be a bit of a whore, a wink and a rub gets you far with him.

Juniper would step up for anyone but not really respond or interact unless you made effort with her. She liked to cuddle with me though, gah I miss her. I wish he hadn't turned into a she-devil.

I've never had to show anyone how to hold the birds unless the were kids, and they are so eager to please and hold Sparrow they do exactly as I say, and Sparrow loves kids.

A thought came to me - some adults refuse to follow instructions. Don't pet the bird - they insist on petting the darn bird! This is rare, but it's happened. What I've done is get into the person's personal space and do strange things like start hugging them, stroking their hair, touch them weird, etc. Usually they get really creeped out and stand back/lean back defensively. Then I say something about, "That's creepy, huh? You don't know me and I do all these weird things in your personal space. Well, that's what the bird feels. You're a stranger invading its personal space. You're being really creepy and weird to the bird." I've not had that fail in getting the person to get a clue. Again, it's rare for me to have to get that creepy, but it's happened.

Adults are the worst, aren't they? Kids are very receptive to directions.

a funny thing a little off topic...sammy the goffin we just got does not like men...he will not come out of the cage for me and certainly not let me pet him in the cage, but if i am holding my 16 month old grandson, sammy is out and in front of me to be petted...go figure....he just loves kids..
