No matter how much your bird "loves" you or is "bonded" to you. It needs to RECALL trained.

I wish I could perfect recall with Apple. He's just SO unmotivated sometimes, even with millet!

Me and Einstein were really awesome with recalling. But I've gotten too lazy. We haven't done any formal training in a while.

The article doesn't say if he was fully flighted or a case of a clipped-but-growing-in parrot that caught a breeze and flew off. I just hope the guy gets him back in one piece.

From my understanding on another list, this bird was fully flighted, not recall trained, never made to fly away before so the owner was lulled into a false sense of security that the bird would never fly away from him.
