| We have 4 dogs 3 of which are inside..I have birds in the upstairs and down as well as fleas....just a hazzard of Fl. as it doesn't get cold enough long enough to stop the cycle...OK, OK, here is the burning ? . Does anyone have an indoor treatment that won't produce harmful vapors for the birds but still KILL those darn bugs????? | |

| I think your best bet is to eliminate the population on the dogs... are you using spot treatment on them? I'm not really aware of anything effective for fleas in the nature of a room-wide treatment that is nontoxic. Before the days of Advantage when I had problems with fleas on my indoor cats, I did use periodic chemical treatments, but I also used a flea comb on them daily, dropping the little buggers into a glass of slightly soapy water. The soap breaks the surface tension, otherwise the just hop off the water and go on their merry way, but with the soap they will drown. Tedious, though.. | |

| TY S-n-S all dogs have drops but they seem to have no effect on theis mess..slightly sandy soil..and they are breeding just under the surface we have sprayed the outside but now the chickens are wandering the entire yard...too bad they don't eat fleas as well as ticks | |

| Use advantage or revolution on the dogs. Every flea that jumps on the dog will die. It worked well for me. | |

| I prefer Frontline Plus as it works on fleas for 3 months and is waterproof, unlike advantage.
I think 5% Sevin dust works on fleas. It's bird safe. You could sprinkle on your carpet, wait 15 minutes and then vacuum I suppose. There used to be a bird safe pyrethrin based spray called Camicide. Haven't bought it in years. Dunno if it's still available.

I really need to slow down and think about what I read...."your best bet is to eliminate the population OF the dogs"

| I'm not sure diatomaceous earth works well in very humid climates. I think it is effective because it is a drying agent. FL is very very VERY damp. It might just turn into mud in short order without taking too many fleas along. And once insects get a foothold, it's rather horrendous. I grew up there and have a lasting horror of palmetto bugs, but I digress.
I suppose the other option is to treat every mammal on the property indoor or out, move the birds out for a week or two, get an exterminator to thoroughly treat inside and out, and hope that takes things down to a manageable level.
Living out here in CA, I have rarely seen fleas in the last decade or so. Used to be a constant battle with our indoor cats, no longer. Mattie did come with a few fleas, but one Advantage treatment for everyone, and they did not establish a foothold. (feethold?)
LOL, zazanomore, that would certainly do it, but I'm not that drastic!

| After trying a couple of things what worked..was Poop Off....I sprayed the concrete floor (I normally don't waste it) and after several hours of trips up and down the stairs still none were jumping...JOY So going to apply to the upstairs and rewash and do the drops on the dogs...7 dust outside and hoping we can get a bit of control over them... - zazanomore wrote:

| Poop off... who knew?
Just remember to retreat in 14 days at the latest to get the hatched eggs. If it were me, I'd treat again in 7 and 14 (if you cant do it every day!). I HATE biting insects. If there's a bug that bites within 15 miles of me, it finds me and calls it's friends and family. If there's ANY bug within 30 meters of me that's NEVER BEEN KNOWN AS A PEOPLE EATER... it hunts me down and decides that todays the day to try human.
I bathe in insect repellant when I leave Colorado.
Such is my life. | |

Such is my life. Ever been bit by a ladybug? Those little buggers hurt! ...Not that I would know, because everyone I've talked to says ladybugs don't bite.

Oh, no, chocolate mousse bites are delicious, but it's really hard to get those tiny little teeth out. - zazanomore wrote:

Um. We have a cat with chronic sinus problems. I do not want to think about this. Ever. I rode an elephant once. I figured as a horseback rider I'd be the star of the group. When I was sitting up there realizing I was totally dependent on the dude on the ground for elephant influence I realized that I am, in fact, a control freak.
