| We picked up our newest family member last night! A 10 week old pearl whiteface male cockatiel. Pictures will come. We named him Doppler. Turns out, the nice lady that we got Poe from's health has taken a bad turn recently, and she has not been able to care for the babies as well as previously. He daughter has taken charge, but feels overwhelmed and the older babies are just not getting as much attention as she would like to give them, so Doppler hasn't been handled as consistently as Poe was. It sounds like this is going to be the last clutch of 'tiels from her - unless something changes - and she is trying desperately to find them good homes. How was Doppler picked? Well, Steph walked up to the cage housing the 'tiel babies (5 of them), said "How ya doin'?" 4 stared blankly at him, and Doppler gave him a "chirrup". Instant love. He's nervous - as we expected - and so I have not approached him with the camera to get photos yet. But he's VERY interested in us. As soon as we enter the room, he's FRONT OF THE CAGE, eyeing us down. This morning when I uncovered him - after the initial "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" look, I was greeted with beautiful birdie song and puffy cheeks. Hopefully within the week he'll be a little more settled in and we'll be able to get some photos. Also: | |

Speaking metaphorically, he's definitely a blue shift.

| Thanks everyone!
Pictures will come... in time.
When we picked him up I attributed his anxiety to his lack of being held recently, as well as being ripped away from his siblings by two strange people, and put into a strange cage in a place he'd never seen. New sounds, smells, people, cats, etc. Over the last few days we have discovered something which disappoints us (towards the breeder, not poor Doppler): He is exceptionally hand shy.
Very hand shy.
We've managed to get from a panic attack during feeding time Tuesday morning, to some heavy hissing during water refreshment Tuesday evening, to light hissing yesterday morning, to no hissing yesterday evening.
I was actually able to get my hand in the cage and resting on his perch just a few inches away from him last night without any hissing. And he ALMOST ate some millet from a spray I was holding. He was tempted.
Tuesday, if you went near the cage and moved your hands - just the TINIEST bit - he went into a panic attack. We're making progress. But for now, no pictures as I don't want him having any MORE reason to hate our hands.
Last night, I discovered that he is "okay" with shirt sleeves. I covered my hand in my sleeve, put it in the cage, worked my way right next to him on the perch, and he just watched me. No panic. No hissing.
As long as there are no hands in or near his cage, he is a very happy birdie, though. He sings (SO PRETTY!), he dances, he plays with his toys, eats, drinks, poops. We gave him a light misting yesterday which he LOVED.
We sing to him, the husband is trying to teach him to whistle the "Trololo" song. Every day after work, we pull up a chair next to his cage and spend some time just chatting to him. Telling him about our day, saying random nonsense.
Hopefully - in time - we will have a happy, hand friendly 'tiel who will enjoy having his photo taken.
Any insight on how to get there is GREATLY appreciated.

| Welcome home Doppler (love the name!) Just be patient and let him approach you - treats also do tend to help He should settle in sooner than later! | |

| Thanks everyone! You make me feel less stressed and saddened about my poor stressy 'tiel baby. On a side note: Have you ever wondered where they got the inspiration for the noise of the baby raptors on Jurassic Park? I used to. Then we brought home Doppler. And I thought POE made funny noises when he was playing... | |

| Progress! PROGRESS! This morning, when refreshing food/water/etc, Doppler did not hiss once. Didn't move to the other edge of the perch. Just stayed where he was and watched as we moved things around and refreshed. Then. THEN! I went to bring him more millet, and he ... he... STARTED EATING IT OUT OF MY HAND! PROGRESS! | |

| Awwwwww!!! He's so cute! I would cuddle the crap out of that bird. All these new tiels...makes me think about getting Einstein a cage mate.
It's a good thing there's a borderline separating me from capt and roz, or I'd have a flock of tiels to go with my flock of budgies!

| Thanks everyone! He's definitely a pretty boy. With a very pretty whistle, now that he has started mimicking the hubby's whistle (I absolutely cannot whistle - no matter how hard I try ). | |
