Peanut my Timneh African Grey Empty
PostSubject: Peanut my Timneh African Grey   Peanut my Timneh African Grey EmptyWed Apr 25, 2012 6:10 pm

I thought I would introduce Peanut, my TAG, first. He was bought at a bird fair from a very poor excuse of a breeder. They didn't know his hatch date -only the month. We were told he was perfetly healthy except for a small problem with his nose. Yeah right!! Aster I wrote the check and gave it to him we were told he was still on hand feeding.

We took him to the avian vet the next day. He had THREE infections. So in two days I learned to handfeeding, give meds and give two shots a day. You would think he would hate me after all this, but thankfully no. I think he actually was so happy to be feeling better that he would have forgiven anything - and that is saying a lot for an African Grey.

So the picture shows how Peanut looks after I have been gone for a few hours. He has malformed mucous membranes and his nose can not drain down the back of his throat as would be normal. So, I have to clean his neres a couple of times a day - more if I can catch him to do it. Did I tell you that he is free flying ! LOL I flush it as often as possible. I am not looking forward to flush the neres of a hormonal Grey - and that is coming too soon!!

Welcome to you and Peanut! Catching and flushing does NOT sound like fun at ALL! You're a good person for doing all that for a bird you just met. Well done my friend!

Thanks everyone. Peanut isn't new to me. He was bought in 2005 at age of 4 months. So we have been nose wiping for 7 years! The vet said there is an operation that might help, but it is very expensive and the outcomes thus far have been very poor. So we have decided to love him the way he is, unless or until he starts getting too many infections - of which there hasn't been any in years. He is just like a toddler, sometimes I say "nose wipe" and he lets me hold his beak and wipe away. Next time he just sees the tissue and he is off and flying! Gota Love him.

He doesn't talk but is very smart and seems to get his own way often!! On the rare times that he is out and my Sun is in his cage, Peanut will open the Sun's cage and let him out.
