I had a non-internet enabled phone that could still send image data over the voice line. You can DO that?! Whoa. Too bad my cell takes nasty quality (and tiny!) pics.

You can DO that?! Whoa. Too bad my cell takes nasty quality (and tiny!) pics. Basically the same concept as dial-up I'd guess. Or even DSL which uses the same infrastructure as landline phone. I expect the phone acts as a modem to the satellite and then the satellite emails -- same concept as sending a text to a phone using email syntax. Never thought that much about it. The phone actually had an option to email out from the photo album thingy. I suppose I should clarify that it was a phone that had some ability to connect to a browser, but it wasn't a smart phone, and I didn't actually have a calling plan that allowed me to do it. I could text to an email address however, but I do think that happens at the satellite not at the phone. I could, however, be making stuff up. It's just the mental model I've been using.
