| Last three days of solar proton measurements from the GOES satellite. So far I haven't heard of any major spacecraft anomalies, but lots of space telescopes are getting lousy data... | |

| Wow! That's.... meaningless to me! But it certainly looks significant and VERY important! | |

| The plot shows a sharp jump in energetic charged particle output from the sun in the direction of earth. It peaked early yesterday and is slowly dieing down, which is typical of these events.
The charged particles are what wreak the most havoc with electronics, although very few get through the Earth's magnetic field. They definitely mess with satellites. They also make for spectacular aurora displays if you happen to be far enough north for that.
Couple of years ago, this plot looked like this, I'd get a phone call in the middle of the night and we'd sit around arguing if we should turn Spitzer Space Telescope's Science Instruments off to reduce the odds of damage or not... | |

Nah. Seriously this happens with some frequency. The last one that was this significant was in 2003. - VickiNumbers wrote:

Yes. Technically a flare is an increase in visual brightness. I'd call this a CME (Cornoal Mass Ejection) aka the outer layer of the sun throwing off stuff, but they are correlated. - KayLayUh wrote:
