Awesome!
Us city folk here, can't seem to bring ourselves to actually slaughter any of our chickens yet. Itsokay. Their day time run area's not covered so the local hawks have been taking care of population control for us. Sad

"Straight run?"

Yeah, I could slaughter my own meat if I had to, but I get agitated when we boil lobsters, so I prefer not to!

That mean unsexed. With some chickens you can pay a little more and have a higher chance of females. Baby chicken sexing's an inexact art.

I grew up with grandparents ringing the neck of chickens right before they plucked and fried them. Smile Talk about YUM!

I'd have NO problem with it!

Nope, none at all!

Now, the lobster thing? I've heard you put them in the pot alive and turn the stove on... THAT seems harsh to me.

We plunge them head first into boiling water. The other approach is to split them down the middle with a knife and then grill or broil. Slowly heating them sounds truly awful, actually.

Henpecked's new flock Empty
PostSubject: Re: Henpecked's new flock   Henpecked's new flock EmptyMon Mar 05, 2012 4:10 pm

A lot of animals don't process "pain" the way humans do. Sure there are responses that we humans would interpret as "pain". Some simple organisms responding to something like light stimulus sometimes "wriggle" and humans can interpret that "wriggle" as "painful" when in actuality there was no pain involved.

Not saying slow boiling a lobster isn't gruesome in the human mind. Just not fully convinced it's "pain" in the true sense of human understanding of the word. It is most definitely a response to a stimulus it has evolved to react to as a factor not favorable to sustaining its life.

From http://www.lobsterscience.ca/faq/4

Can lobsters feel pain - do they have nerves?

Answer:
Similar to insects, the nervous system of a lobster is very simple and neither insects nor lobsters have real brains. Lobsters have a series of 15 nervous ganglia that span the length of the lobster, on the ventral side or belly side, with nerves projecting from each of these ganglia. The first ganglion is the closest thing to a brain. In general, for an organism to perceive pain it must have a complex nervous system. Many scientists that are studying the nervous system of lobsters tell us that they do not process pain. Lobsters don’t have a cerebral cortex, which is where pain is processed in humans or dogs and cats. If they do feel pain, it is most definitely in a different way than humans do. A new study out of Norway concluded that most invertebrates - including lobsters, crabs, worms, snails, slugs and clams - probably don't have the capacity to feel pain.

As for killing chickens, I'm sure I could psych myself out to do it. I can kill mice, rats and rabbits for snake food. Getting through the first time is the hardest.

^ OK, now THAT was interesting.

As for the chicken thing, I think it'd be harder for you to kill the chicken, Roz, because you've kept them for pets. I've only ever SEEN chickens as a source of food, whether they're eggs for breakfast or meat for dinner. It wasn't until I met you that I ever considered that chickens could be something other than that. It'd be like me trying to kill a guinea pig. I know they're food in many parts of the world and I imagine I could psych myself up to do it if I needed to, but it wouldn't be easy.

Oh yeah! Guinea pigs are only good for snake food! vicki 5280

Hey, I love rats as pets and I can kill them for snake food. For the chickens it would have to be one of the ones used for eggs or the rooster. One I have no real emotional attachment to.

Most valuable advice a friend of mine gave me when I was learning to be a killer - Don't play with the food.

There are pets and then there's food.

My uncle had a pig we played with (rode, fed watermelon to). He killed it and fed it to us one summer. I didn't eat pork for years after that. Doing something similar to chickens would kill me inside.

So...when we were deciding on the Bantam flock I was totally against a feather footed breed like the Silkie.....one of my friends shared this video on Facebook so that I could see it.
It is rather lengthy, however I thought some of you might like to see it.

Roz this has YOU all over it Henpecked's new flock 259833051

That was pretty sweet! And cute.
I had a couple of guineas in the beginning. Saw a hawk hit one but it wasn't able to kill the guinea. Boy did they learn to panic next time they saw a hawk shadow.

Was just at the feed store and they had a bunch of turkey chicks. Thought of Josie and Henpecked!
