Henpecked's new flock

The big bird is home taking care of the new flock while Henpecked is out on the road earning $ to feed them ...

they are Buff Brahma, White Laced Red Cornish and Barred Rock Bantam chicks..a total of 31 delivered live and HUNGRY

sorry..fixed the video...and they are meat and a self sustaining flock..in time I will be adding Buff Orpington Bantams to the flock to make a very well rounded flock of meat chickens

they don't sex the bantams and all are straight run..the Brahma are suppose d to be very broody and the Barred are high layers and the Cornish are the prime meat..for 2 people 2 pounds is a very good size

Us city folk here, can't seem to bring ourselves to actually slaughter any of our chickens yet. Itsokay. Their day time run area's not covered so the local hawks have been taking care of population control for us.

Yeah, I could slaughter my own meat if I had to, but I get agitated when we boil lobsters, so I prefer not to!

That mean unsexed. With some chickens you can pay a little more and have a higher chance of females. Baby chicken sexing's an inexact art.

did I fail to mention the eggs in the incubator???there are 18..not all viable, but should be hatching on the 10th. Plenty of fertilizer for the garden coming right up

Now, the lobster thing? I've heard you put them in the pot alive and turn the stove on... THAT seems harsh to me.

We plunge them head first into boiling water. The other approach is to split them down the middle with a knife and then grill or broil. Slowly heating them sounds truly awful, actually.

A lot of animals don't process "pain" the way humans do. Sure there are responses that we humans would interpret as "pain". Some simple organisms responding to something like light stimulus sometimes "wriggle" and humans can interpret that "wriggle" as "painful" when in actuality there was no pain involved.

Not saying slow boiling a lobster isn't gruesome in the human mind. Just not fully convinced it's "pain" in the true sense of human understanding of the word. It is most definitely a response to a stimulus it has evolved to react to as a factor not favorable to sustaining its life.

As for killing chickens, I'm sure I could psych myself out to do it. I can kill mice, rats and rabbits for snake food. Getting through the first time is the hardest.

As for the chicken thing, I think it'd be harder for you to kill the chicken, Roz, because you've kept them for pets. I've only ever SEEN chickens as a source of food, whether they're eggs for breakfast or meat for dinner. It wasn't until I met you that I ever considered that chickens could be something other than that. It'd be like me trying to kill a guinea pig. I know they're food in many parts of the world and I imagine I could psych myself up to do it if I needed to, but it wouldn't be easy.

Hey, I love rats as pets and I can kill them for snake food. For the chickens it would have to be one of the ones used for eggs or the rooster. One I have no real emotional attachment to.

My uncle had a pig we played with (rode, fed watermelon to). He killed it and fed it to us one summer. I didn't eat pork for years after that. Doing something similar to chickens would kill me inside.

So...when we were deciding on the Bantam flock I was totally against a feather footed breed like the Silkie.....one of my friends shared this video on Facebook so that I could see it.

That was pretty sweet! And cute.
I had a couple of guineas in the beginning. Saw a hawk hit one but it wasn't able to kill the guinea. Boy did they learn to panic next time they saw a hawk shadow.

Was just at the feed store and they had a bunch of turkey chicks. Thought of Josie and Henpecked!
