New cages! Empty
PostSubject: New cages!   New cages! EmptyFri Apr 13, 2012 5:39 pm

So... apparently I underestimated my ability to pitch a good argument and convert the hubby over to my way of thinking ( affraid who woulda thunk it?!). We're ordering the new bird cages this weekend New cages! 2154879677!

Looking at: http://www.mysafebirdstore.com/SMALL_BIRD_CAGES-A_E_Flight_Cage_32x21.html

But, I am also fairly new to this whole "ordering bird stuff online" thing. So if anyone has suggestions on where to shop/a different cage which would also be nice, I am all ears (so to speak)!

We're upgrading the homes of both fids, and to keep things simple want to get them each the same cage. Looking for something no more than 36" wide and 24" deep (anything above that will crowd out our living space), height is not a concern. We'd also like to keep the price of both cages and shipping below $400 CAD (hubby says $300, I say $500, so we met in the middle).

On a side note, I made a trip to the dollar store last night and found.... BAMBOOOOOOOO! Untreated, dirt cheap bamboo. Loaded up the car with it. And now.... I have to figure out how I can make a play stand out of it...

My Safe Bird Store comes very highly recommended by pretty much everyone. I believe she also discounts your first order 10%.

This is much like what we got for Blanco. The only real "flaw" aside from lack of perks like feeder doors and a seed guard, is the lack of horizontal bars, which makes cage-climbing a bit more difficult.

I wish everyone could hear my frustrated grumblings right about now. They're pretty frustrated and grumbly.

We went to order the cages, only to discover that shipping is going to be - and I quote the nice lady from the store who at least contacted us to let us know - "a small fortune". We're still waiting on an exact quote, but after looking it up on the USPS website, it does look like it will be about the same as though we had ordered a third cage.

I consider myself as pretty resourceful, though. So... depending on what the actual shipping quote is, I have also located a super awesome service: in a town five minutes south of the border there is a parcel service. For a $5 fee they will sign for my package and hold it for up to 6 months for me to come pick up.

It's about a two hour drive from where I live, so we'd be looking at about $40 in gas + $5 for their fee, vs $120 estimate on the USPS website.

Might be making a trip south of the border soon....

Good news!

The lady at mysafebirdstore.com is awesome! And she was extremely helpful and patient. And we are now having the cages shipped to Neche, ND! New cages! 932634153

As I do not have a passport, the hubby will be making this trip on his own, unless I sit around a coffee shop in a small town on the Canadian side of the border until her gets back in Canada.

New cages! 1540013426 !!! I wonder if the grocery store in Neche carried Trix and Vanilla Coke... might have to get the hubby to make an extra stop.....

Oh, we have Captain Crunch. But yeaaaaaaars ago they took Trix out of Canada, and I have been trying to get some ever since. Whenever a friend goes to the states, I give a wishlist of: Vanilla Coke and Trix.

The ONE person who picked them up for me had a mishap and Vanilla Cola ended up spraying all over the car, drenching my Trix box (which she promptly threw out, forgetting that it was protected by a plastic bag).

We actually don't have a lot of foods that the States has, from what I hear. Our food regulations are too strict.

It's pretty nice up here. Like everywhere, it has it's issues, but for the most part I like it.

Everyone should flee north of the border. We have LOTS of extra space (especially in Manitoba - the Greater Calgary Area has more people in it than alllllllll of Manitoba). Manitoba also has a waterfall, and pretty national parks. Alberta has mountains, and chalets that can be rented for $75/night.

AND... even though our gas costs more, our average household income is considerably higher than the average household income in the US. So it looks like you're richer on paper.

THE CAGES ARE COMING! THE CAGES ARE COMING! (I am running wildly in cirlcles) New cages! 4014162036

I have tracking numbers!

Alas, anticipated delivery is not until next week, which means that the fids won't be moving until next weekend.

I am however now perusing sites that I always want to order from, but don't because free shipping only applies within the continental US.

I really need some K-Cups for my Keurig. Like... 200 of them. Free shipping on orders over $45 within the continental US, eh? ... New cages! 2041350370

(The hubby is going to be so frustrated by the time I'm done Smile

A waterfall? Just one? LOL

Here in Thunder Bay there's Kakabeka Falls. Since I've moved here I haven't been to them (no car) but I have been to them, and they are beautiful. In September I did a hike of the Sleeping Giant, which was AWESOME. Lake Superior is gorgeous.

It's .... Manitoba. I only know of the one waterfall, though there may be more. I've only seen the one.

We also have a dessert. And mountains. And forests. And wetlands. Beaches (oh so many beaches!). And tundra-like conditions up north. I'm thinking about making a trip up to Churchill some day to see the Belugas. A 3 day trip for two including airfare, accommodations and beluga tour would only cost about $600 from Winnipeg.

Manitoba is a vast, inconsistent land. If you don't like the geographic features where you are, drive two hours in any direction and you'll be in what looks like a completely different part of the world.

I suppose that I should have mentioned that I DO have a question in my last post.

The new cages will be set up and ready to go on Saturday. Doppler is still being quarantined. I know that the best option is four weeks, however we do not have space in the bedroom to fit the new cage.... so, my question is this:

Will it be safe to bring Doppler to the livingroom and into his new cage (which is across the room from Poe) a week early, or should we keep him in the bedroom in the old cage for a week?

I know that the best option would be to keep him quarantined for the full amount of time.... but I also know that once the new cage is here, I am going to feel SO BAD if I don't let him enjoy it right away...

My husband would agree with Dusty. He's pointed out to me that our attempt to quarantine Blanco is something of a farce because 'tiels are so dusty. It's very likely the powder down has spread around the house by now anyway. We are probably going to move him in with the other two a week early as well, so he won't be as lonely.

We've been thinking the same thing. As much as we may think we're being effective... the truth is, we're likely not. Our apartment is not huge, we have cats running amok... And Doppler is in the bedroom. Meaning that he is practically right on top of ALL of our clothing.

I hate to give off the wrong impression, but we're really not terribly concerned, either... Doppler came from the same breeder as Poe, and when we took him in to the closest-thing-to-an-Avian-vet-Winnipeg-can-offer-on-short-notice the other week, he was given a clean bill of health (from what she could tell). We're not worriers to begin with in general.

Sooooooo.... I would LOVE to have them in the same room.... even if it's just to prevent the constant screaming fids as they try to communicate from room to room...
