| Hello everyone! So I might (hopefully) be moving within the next few months out of my Dads house. The place I am moving to has a huge backyard, and the weather is almost always in the 70s. Because of the weather being so nice I think it would be awesome for Zada to have the opportunity to be outside in an outdoor cage. Where can I get an outdoor cage? Or how hard is it to build one? Can you keep a normal bird cage outside? (I would think not.. right?)
Anyway, any info would be great!

| Some "normal" cages could be outside. It depends on what it's made out of. But you'd probably want to roof part of it over for shelter from the sun.
Sounds like a nice place!
Some companies do offer aviaries for outdoor use, I think King's may have some.

| The issue with outside is not keeping the bird in (the Cage) but keeping predators out !!. I'd suggest a cage built from 1/2 x 3 12 gauge wire, SS would be the best. Such a cage would cost close to 1,000 $ for a macaw. Local company builds them. The other issue is keeping humans out, thieves !!! I assume this is a cage she would be in and not be 100% supervised. Bugs could also be an issue as they are here in Fla. I'd give it lots of thought. I can tell you plenty of tales about ,ants, hawks, cats, dogs, raccoons, snakes, mosquitoes, the list is endless. | |

| Back to the outdoor cage idea. I have seen screened carports and gazebos used for this. They are light enough to move them around and they are cheaper and easy to assemble. Most Walmarts and Home Depots sell them for about $300 | |

| I am just concerned about how safe outdoor cages are. I wouldn't want her getting attached by a raccoon or something. Do you think she would be scared outside by herself?

| Well, I think I'd take it a bit at a time and not leave her all alone. Unless you can critter-proof the aviary, there is some risk in leaving her alone. Plus, not to scare you, but my new pet sitters informed me that they had lost several birds when someone came with wire cutters and liberated them aviary and all. I really like the idea of a sun cage, but I think I'd want to keep an eye on it, personally. | |

| I agree. Putting a bird outside permanently is a bad idea for so many reasons, theft being one of many. I would also think Zada would become despondent being alone as she is so used to being around you. Leaving her like that would definitely change her personality. I would only do it as a kind of scheduled playtime thing, while you are there watching. As SnS mentioned, even I have seen the most secure of aviaries broken into and birds taken. It's tragic but it is a reality we must consider. | |

| Something I'm considering doing in my bird room (haven't told the hubs this yet though - hehe) is building an aviary that's attached to my house on one side. I'd have the window as the access point. On nice days, the birds could go in and out at will, and on bad weather days I'd just keep the window closed and the birds inside. We have a garden-level basement (that's a basement that's half in the ground - so we have windows at ground level) with a window directly below the bird-room window. That could be my access point for any cleaning or repairs I'd need to do. I haven't thought out ALL the details yet, but that's the rough idea. In California, something like that might work too, if the family buys into the idea. | |
