It's coming time for Scotty's annual exam and I'm feeling less than confident about our current bird vet. She is only available 2-3 days a week and is usually overbooked, it is unclear she'd be any use in emergency. I'm wondering if any of y'all have experience with or recommendations for an avian specialist in this area. Preferably north of downtown as traveling north-south during rush hour, especially to the Westside where I know there are excellent bird vets, might as well be in another state. The three best options I've identifies are a new vet in practice locally, Keri Franco who is an AAV member but not a diplomate, Attila Molinar in Calabasas (if you get past the name and the fact that he's from Transylvania, he is an avian diplomate and they are open 7 days a week) and Amy Worrell in West Hills (also an avaian diplomate, not sure what the emergency situation is).

I know you want to avoid north-south, but there are a couple avian vets that work at the Community Companion Pet Hospital in Temple City. It's a bit of a drive for you, but they were great with Aries when he went in. It was a coincidence that we even took him in b/c we were going first for my cat and saw that they had a parrot in the waiting room (one of the green flock parrots that someone brought in after getting hurt) That weekend I hate to say it, but we didn't have to look up credentials and they were doing a quick clip for travel and a quick exam on him.

I work at Caltech, so Temple City wouldn't be THAT bad. I actually live in the Glendale/La Crescenta area and I'm consider Calabasas and Santa Monica. Are these Avian-certified and/or members of the AAV? I don't think I saw anyone there in the AAV list. Do they have emergency off-hours services? I'm looking for more of a specialist with better availability than the person I'm currently using. She seems to know birds and she keeps birds, but I don't feel I have a good rapport with her and she's only in 3 days a week, so I'm likely to be trolling the phone book if there is an emergency.

Are you in Fresno or Temple City? If the latter we should get a coffee or something some time.

The vet hospital has gone under some changes from what I've gathered. They're open 7 days a week, though the avian vets come in at 9am. The one we saw was certified she just hadn't had time yet to get all her stuff listed with the office...the big changes I was talking about. She keeps birds and was very good with Aries. It was just a coincidence that we actually found that they had avian care though, we were referred to them when our pup had his hemophilia episode.

I'm from San Gabriel, but live in Fresno. My grandparents had our animals for a while during our transition to Fresno and finding our own place. We visit regularly. We should get together the next time we head down that way Smile
