| ALWAYS READ THE LABELS ON THE FOODS YOU BUY With all the food and pet products now coming from China , it is best to make sure you read label at the grocery store and especially Walmart when buying food products. Many products no longer show where they were made, only give where the distributor is located. It is important to read the bar code to track it's origin. How to read Bar Codes .... interesting! This may be useful to know when grocery shopping, if it's a concern to you.GREAT WAY TO "BUY USA & CANADA " AND NOT FROM CHINA!!
The whole world is concerned about China-made "black hearted goods". Can you differentiate which one is made in Taiwan or China ?
If the first 3 digits of the barcode are 690 691 or 692, the product is MADE IN CHINA.471 is Made in Taiwan . This is our right to know, but the government and related departments never educate the public, therefore we have to RESCUE ourselves.
Nowadays, Chinese businessmen know that consumers do not prefer products "MADE IN CHINA ", so they don't show from which country it is made.
However, you may now refer to the barcode - remember if the first 3 digits are:
690-692 ... then it is MADE IN CHINA 00 - 09 ... USA & CANADA 30 - 37 FRANCE 40 - 44 GERMANY471 .... Taiwan 49 ... JAPAN 50 ... UK BUY USA & CANADIAN MADE by watching for "0" at the beginning of the number. We need every boost we can get! Pass this on to everybody on your E-Mail Contact List!!

| Hm. . . Should I go here? Preface with - I love all my fellow residents of Paradise and mean no offense at all.
Admit - China lacks sufficient laws, guidelines and oversight to protect consumers.
Deny - China is the sole culprit in injury to consumers.
It's cheap to manufacture in China. I'm of the opinion that foreign companies also outsource to countries such as China (and other countries with lax manufacturing and labor laws) with full knowledge of these deficiencies and DON'T CARE (again, just my opinion) because it MAKES THEM MONEY (again, just my opinion). Chinese manufacturers are given specs by the foreign companies, and they produce to those specs. Those specs provided may not comply with the foreign country's laws and I think the company issuing the specs probably doesn't care because the savings to produce in a half-*ssed manner MAKES THEM BIGGER PROFITS.
In the US, the importer is responsible for the quality and safety of the good imported into the country. In the case of the petfood recalls, a US company (ChemNutra) with an American CEO, imported the unsafe gluten. In the case of Mattel with the lead paint, I believe Mattel later admitted it was Mattel's design flaw that caused the injuries. And I believe Mattel admits they do not monitor their overseas manufacturers. Again - In the US, the importer is responsible for the quality and safety of the good imported into the country.
Admit - In China, the manufacturing areas seem like the wild wild east. It's capitalism run amok with no enforcement of any standards
I full on support "putting your money where your mouth is" approach. Buy American/Canadian/domestically manufactured products. But are Americans willing to shell out the money to buy American? I'd think not, or this wouldn't be an issue. It's just not profitable for US companies to keep it in America.

| Snopes and Urban Legends both say it's not that simple... you cannot rely on using those numbers in that way, it has more to do with how and where the bar code was applied for. From Urban Legends: - Quote :
- Analysis: The information above is misleading and unreliable, on two counts:
There's more than one kind of bar code in use around the world. UPC bar codes, the type most commonly used in the United States, do not typically contain a country identifier. A different type of bar code known as EAN-13 does contain a country identifier, but it's more commonly used in Europe and other countries outside the U.S.
Even in the case of EAN-13 bar codes, the digits associated with country of origin don't necessarily specify where the product was manufactured, but rather where the bar code itself was registered. So, for example, a product manufactured in China and sold in France could have an EAN-13 bar code identifying it as a "French" product.
Looking for a "Made in XYZ" label is generally more helpful, but, particularly with regard to foods and beverages, there's no sure-fire way to determine in every case where a product or its components originated. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration mandates country-of-origin labeling on many food products, but there are exceptions, most notably the entire category of "processed foods." Consumer groups are currently advocating the closure of these loopholes. Roz also makes some valid points. As I understand it, for example, Apple manufactures the iPod in China. It depends a bit on how much you trust the company overseeing the quality control. Interestingly, I often find the same folks who worry about products from China are at the same time in favor of de-regulating the same industries in the US.
