PostSubject: More Piper News.   More Piper News. EmptyWed Nov 16, 2011 6:03 pm

I got Piper's bloodwork back about an hour ago. His protein is too low and his liver enzymes are too high. I need to go pick up another medication for him tomorrow, which he'll be on for a month. The vet also wants to see him back in a week.

I'm not really sure how I'm going to sneak any protein into his diet because he won't try anything new. He eats bananas and apples pretty regularly, but that's about the extent of anything he'll try. Any hints or suggestions are much appreciated.

Chicken and egg. If he won't eat it in bits, you can kind of puree it like a pate, smaller birds tend to like that better.

I've pureed it and cut it in bits. He doesn't like either. Would chicken baby food do the trick? He seems to eat anything in baby food, even if he refuses it in other forms.

Absolutely. Chicken baby food is simply pureed chicken. Another thing you might try is sprinkling/mixing protein powder in his food? I imagine you'd need to research the source of the protein to see if it's one that's easily used by birds, but without having done any research, I don't know why it wouldn't work.

What about the Quicko Egg food? It seems as if it would disappear into anything wet pretty well. There are also good plant sources of protien -- legume sprouts if he'll eat them, for example. You could even try a little yogurt or hard cheese.

He'll eat ricotta cheese and the egg food covered treat sticks. I'm sprouting some seed mix so hopefully he'll eat that as well.

Along the lines of what Vicki said, you can also do oatmeals and baby formulas in powder form. Mix them with other stuff. You can also do beans, they have a lot of protein.
